The website has had a new makeover as well............
LOL! Both Mac and PC too.
Good for them. Well, at least the automation is better than Cubase 5.
Well, I am using Reaper for Sound Design and just some general stuff. I don't even bother with Nuendo anymore other than Midi.
The new update looks really promising.

It looks very interesting. I'm just going to wait to hear what luck people have with it. I'd be especially interested to hear how stable it is. If I can spend the time, I want to try it out, using the MCU, etc. with it.

The Windows version is as always , solid as a rock..
OSX is still in BETA and is flaky, reminds me of another app... :eusa_whistle:

..out of interest,
I had a quick browse around the Reaper forum at the end user reaction and feedback to the release , and can't help but being stuck by the overwhelming sense of "community" there, not to mention the due and mutual respect displayed in both directions.
Compare that to the chaos that usually ensues after any Steini release..
This is a direct reflection of the overall approach , respect, and business model displayed by the developers , if only... :-(
Hats off to Justin and the rest of the dev team , again..
Here's a perhaps small, but a brilliant feature (may have been in 2.0 - don't use Reaper much, but dl'd 3.0 to check it out): the folder icon on a track toggles between turning that track into a folder, and automatically including tracks below it, and off. If you change a folder's track to a sub folder, it nest, click again, it's back to a track, click again, it's a track outside of the top-level folder. Very cool, very fast, but it can get confusing and screw up nested folders if you lose track of where you are.
Reaper is getting there. Impressive app and approach no doubt.

I wish Cubendo would follow Photoshops lead on folders. Just select the tracks you want in a folder then "Add Folder Track" which would nest them all inside automatically.

Reaper is looking better and better. Catching up fast. Steinberg need to take notice I would think. One more major version (especially concentrating on midi) and I think it would be very viable for me.
Another little cool feature even if a bit of eye candy - potentially useful for some things: Item Notes - put notes on a midi or audio clip, and not just notes, but also load graphics as backgrounds... it doesn't just support graphics, but png files with transparent backgrounds... this could be killer just to use midi clips as marker/section/cue notes. Adding graphics might be one step more than needed in a time critical environment, but to have a template for certain project needs already setup with basic section or cue clips, with custom graphics could be very useful.
Separate track and window layout recalls - work beautifully. Also like that Reaper can fit the screen and drop the windows borders.
Here are a list of things that might tip the scales for some work for me, eventually at least if Nuendo falls behind (I'm going to send these to the devs):
1 - Improve VSTi multi-output handling and setup in general (e.g. just make it faster and more intuitive);
2 - enhance midi with logical processing options and combine quantize with humanize options
3 - Edit mode equivalent
4 - Multichannel metering? (not sure if this is implemented in some way yet)
5 - Menus and workflow of setting up some prefs is still a bit convoluted/confusing, but improving.
Probably more extended video support - haven't really tested that much.
Well, the development of such a small app for such little money is quite amazing.
Just the fact of home much they have turned over in a few years is astounding.
Well, once again, it just shows you how much of a difference it can make when a product is developed for the users instead of from the marketing perspective.
Cubendo has really become an app developed for the marketing department at SB.
LEX
From the little time I've spent with R3.0, here's what strikes me in going back to Nuendo:
Nuendo definitely has a more advanced workflow in terms of where, how, and how many features are implemented - little things like tons of midi control/editing capabilities, how easy it is to visualize the workspace at a glance; tempo warp function (tempo map in Reaper is basic - no tempo y axis yet either, but it looks like various ramp functions are planned - (slow start/end fast star/end, bezier are greyed out atm); and being able to drag barlines in Nuendo sets it apart from other apps for fast and accurate tempo mapping).
I do find that I'm missing some of the customization that Reaper 3 offers - even just being able to maximize the main window *and* go into full screen mode on a main monitor in a multi-monitor setup (without worrying about grabbing a border and dragging it off), and still have either floating windows, or the dock on a separate monitor; *and* having screensets to alter that view at a keystroke is brilliant. Nuendo works fine with workspaces, but the GUI is locked inside Windows windowing system and there are permanent limitations there.
Reaper still has a ways to go, but it is a great app for it's short and fast development life. Looks much better now with the new GUI.
It is impressive. Given the changes in v3, I wouldn't be surprised if the feature additions come faster now that it seems to have a solid basis to build on.
I have no doubt that in terms of midi, Reaper falls short.
But like I said before, in terms of sound design building it is quick and simple which makes getting the job done easier.

LEX, Dedric,
It may not be there just yet, certainly MIDI is in its infancy, but growing rapidly, if the majors are not looking over their shoulders, then they are bigger idiots than even we could have imagined.. :D
Quote from the new user guide...
REAPER isn’t just about software, and it isn’t just about making music. It’s about a whole lot more. REAPER is a whole community. It represents the way music should be, the way the internet should be, the way computers should be, the way program development and licensing should be …. in fact, the way the world should be.
It’s about collaboration and co-operation, and it is truly awesome. If you’ve already laboured or suffered at the hands of some software companies, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. If you haven’t been there, then, believe me, you don’t want to.
Pretty much sums it up from an end user perspective..
Quote from Reaper Website:
Honest Business Model:
We offer a good product at a fair price.
We don't spend money and effort on marketing, complicated piracy protection, or other things that do not directly improve REAPER and the user experience.
We think the good will generated by playing fair and being responsive to users is more valuable to our business than short-term profits.

@vin ... the above is why I actually felt good about sending CockOS money for their software and why I inwardly fume when sending it Steinberg's way.
It's not about the $ amount (for me anyway), it's the attitude.
Two companies seemingly diametrically opposed when it comes to end user satisfaction.
I believe THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDW_Hj2K0wo) gives some insight into the Steinberg downfall in that area and how they could turn it around
Well, what is the most ironic part is that if they gave the users what they needed (rather than what marketing thinks will help sell it), and look at the user more as a benefit than a hinder, and provide timely updates to fix the dumb and stupid problems that constantly plague the program, it would sell itself.
They would only need the marketing department to help promote the software rather than decide on its development and direction.
The word of mouth on the streets keep people from buying the software.
It is unfortunate that SB can't ever see this POV and it is unfortunate that they allow the marketing team to push the direction of the software.
I think Reaper shows how well word of mouth can do for a software program, or anything for that matter.
Problem is once people get a bad word, they will never try it.

WOW.
Iīm really getting scared here.
I was watching reaper for a longer time now. Its a gem DAW. Now with those updates... WOW.
Iīm scared becouse I invested thousands of dollars to get a :piss2: "flagship" application, which isnīt working as advertised!. Now I can get almost the same for 200 U$:icon_eek3: I just canīt switch knowing that my money was badly invested.
When Reaper gets eucon support, it might be tempting.....:sulkoff:

The question remains though - what if everybody did that? What does marketing and advertising pay for externally and does it benefit the industry as a whole?
Is it just the previously rich illuminati of coders/companies who can get involved in this altruistic vision or is it a business model that can sustain a hundred families? It is the companies with the hundred plus employees that did all the innovation after all and it's easy for a bored multi-millionaire to make anything their plaything.
I don't get it. It records audio, it records midi - name one revolutionary thing it does that another sequencer/audio interface mixer doesn't do already and I'll eat my hat.
$60 for a non-commercial license, $225 for a commercial one. What do you get for $225 - a company written manual, .pdf or written - no. Phone support - no. Support of the industry via marketing - no.
I don't get the hype, I really don't - it's an ok product, but that's about it and I've cocked around with it since v2.

Right..,
I think its a little more than a bored millionaire making a plaything.. , its more about the approach of the devs to ensure its a 2 way street with their end users/community in regards to the ongoing development.
So by your definition, because the more established companies were the original innovators of the DAW paradigm, the smaller devs are forever in their debt ?
It would be a pretty small and secluded group then that has the right to dare to develop anything new if we were to follow your premise, Hell why stop at just software , lets apply that to any and all of the above to do with audio technology/engineering/recording
There is plenty of new innovation in Reaper in regards to routing and MP scalability , just to name 2, that makes the innovators look like Inspector Clusoe..
Re your argument for company written manuals /support , company written manuals from my experience leave a lot to be desired, and in regards to support, this forum and the other community forums are proof positive that Steinbergs support is near non existent.., what was your point again.. ?
The hype ?
Where have I hyped anything..
I think Captain has a point - there is a significant deviation from a standard longterm business model that has benefitted the community aspect - similar to open source projects.
But the downside is there isn't a proven, established company behind the product with support beyond a web forum, and marketing beyond word of mouth. If Reaper is selling well, that could change. If not, it's really hit or miss as to how long the honeymoon will last.
The upside is that the devs really seem committed to the product and may well eventually expand their support and marketing capabilities to truly address a commercial customer base.
Right now Reaper is a couple(?) of guys that can sacrifice a significant amount of up front profitability to take any approach they want, but there is a tradeoff that I think is going to become more apparent in the next year or two.
Presonus couldn't take the same approach. Digidesign couldn't do the same. Steinberg, MOTU and Cakewalk couldn't. They all have to fund v1.0 development, salaries, rent, utilities, marketing expenses, *and* at least part of v2.0 development; and balance marketing and selling the product with those dev costs. The Cockos guys have few costs, and few liabilities from what I can see.
Having your bills paid for going in makes a huge difference in how you can and will approach product development and marketing, to a point at least. That has certainly helped Reaper, but eventually it will have to adopt a more standard model to go beyond being a cool rebel app. It does seem they are marketing their developments and skills, so they may be starting to look at this as more of a traditional business, and with that will come some of the negatives of a sales-driven business model vs. a "for the love of it"/"who cares if it sells" approach.
That doesn't mean the other guys couldn't learn a few things from Reaper, but likewise, I think Reaper will have to start taking cues from the other guys soon if it is ever going to break out of the underground into the mainstream.
I like where it's headed in some ways and am more optimistic about it's potential now than previously, but there is still a big gap between Reaper as a commercial product and ProTools etc.

Software has already cost thousands of people their jobs.
The idea that REAPER should sustain a hundred families because Steinberg does is just slightly short sighted.
Steinberg as well as many other DAW developers have cost numerous industry professionals their jobs just as DJ's have cost working musicians their jobs and band in a box type apps and samplers have cost hardware company employees their jobs.
To cherry pick the argument here and portray CockOS as fly by nighters who are damaging the industry is failing to acknowledge, the whole field is a fledgling industry and as one door closes another opens.
How would you feel if for generations you had been manufacturing hand crafted instruments only to have someone with a mic come along and make it available to the world with no recompense to the maker of the original instrument as the sampling world has done?
There has been and still is so much rot and greed in this whole industry that I welcome the changes that are taking place.
This is a much larger argument that is trying to be introduced here in a particularly piecemeal way and, I think, rather unfairly characterizing CockOS as undermining growth.
I happen to be of the opposite opinion.
I like what the company stands for and is trying to do.
I like that there is a youthful exuberance and a maybe somewhat naive lack of marketing savvy.
I am particularly biased in favour of the clip I posted earlier and find the marketing industry to be a rather revolting aspect of the worst capitalism has to offer.
Wake up to the world view and you will see this world is changing for the better and the only ones who are trying to stop it are those profiteering from the standard rapacious model.
Rant over and out.
I will not spend time here defending my view as there is a large body of erudite work by people far more informed and savvy than me to research if you are interested.
Suffice to say, most of the psuedo intellectual posturing I read on these things reminds me people are most certain in their ignorance.
:098:
p.s I defer to everybody else who has an opinion as I'm not too attached to mine ;)
Suffice to say, most of the psuedo intellectual posturing I read on these things reminds me people are most certain in their ignorance.
)
I assume you weren't aiming that at me, or you are missing the mark, and cherry picking your response, rather than recognizing reality vs. reaction.
I simply proposed that for Reaper to become a professionally viable app, it will have to expand beyond a couple of developers - given what Steinberg users expect of Steinberg that isn't happening, that should be rather easy to spot. Eventually two devs have more work on their hands than they can handle, and the bulk of customer support and business admin must be delegated.
This is simple business, not some "new world view" vs. "old world view". It's just a recording/editing app, not the hope for all mankind. It will have whatever success it will have - I hope it continues to grow and eventually become a viable professional option, but it isn't quite there yet. I can't speak for anyone else's views on it, but that's mine.
I don't know that I would blanket characterize the industry as filled with "rot and greed". People can be greedy, and many are. People can fail, and many do. People can act without integrity, and many do. People can also be honest, decent, and care about more than themselves, and again, many do.
To cast such a pessimistic, almost hopelessly dark cloud over the whole industry simply lumps the good in with the bad and tosses them all out ignorantly and without regard, which imho, is just as bad as contributing to the "rot and greed".
Maybe time to cool off a bit? Seems there's quite a bit of emotion wrapped up in Reaper's success/or lack thereof.

more likely my own psuedo intellectual posturing (I am not even close to being an intellectual or academic) is what I'm projecting :D
Certainly not directed at anyone specifically and definitely at the borderline of having any contextual relevance to this thread.
Your points are always well thought and relevant kdm.
I do think REAPER is part of a new broom though that is sweeping the industry.
I enjoy being the fool on the hill right now.
I think this is going far beyond the original point.
Reaper still has alot of growing todo, but the point is what it has grown in such a short time is nothing short of remarkable.
Remember, ProTools started the same way. It was one guy in his garage.
Euphonix was 2 brothers in their garage with no experience in consoles. BTW, 2 of the original Euphonix consoles built in their garage, are still in use.
Digidesign went corporate, became arrogant, lost users, pulled back and listened and regained users.
While SB has some really great ideas and some REALLY innovative ideas, their delivery has fallen short.
User confidence is at an all time low, user support is non exsistant, updates rarely exist. Even look on the N.com with routing being lost and Fredo's response is just as it has always been. Doesn't happen here.
Just like it was with video truncation. It was defensive, not constructive.
OMF, the same way.
The real point though is, people are looking elsewhere. People are moving to other platforms leaving SB.
I think what is most disturbing is that SB doesn't even seem to care if people leave.
I guess that shows you how much they value their users.
Well, I am looking forward to using Reaper 3 more so than Nuendo, at least for audio.
Regardless of how many people are programming Reaper. They have accomplished more IMO than SB.

All businesses have to change and evolve now, so maybe this is a sign of things to come. Personally I like the idea of small, fast on their feet businesses rather than big corporations that need to make millions every year, particularly in the software industry. Big corporations have caused a lot of anguish lately, I am all for small business.

I like that there is a youthful exuberance and a maybe somewhat naive lack of marketing savvy.
Personally, what I like about the "youthful exuberence," etc. of a small company with a Reaper-like product is that with less of a company to worry about, more focus might go towards refining the product itself than spent on managing the company.
I am particularly biased in favour of the clip I posted earlier and find the marketing industry to be a rather revolting aspect of the worst capitalism has to offer.

Running a small business myself, I am also very much in favor of small businesses. Extremely so. :-)
Drifting OT for a moment:
As we all think through our opinions of the corporate world, I think it's important to remember that all big businesses started very small - usually one person (reality, not defense). The problem is that larger businesses forget, and to be fair, lose the ability to think like a small business, and in many ways, it's unavoidable and inevitable - size has advantages and disadvantages. So if anyone becomes a big business, innovates the next Apple or Microsoft, try to remember what made you successful when you were small, and try to translate that to the larger venue... but above all, I think personal integrity at all levels of any business are the key to a better corporate model - customers first, not second or third; act responsibly for your industry (and customers), not just the bottom line (fire the board and shareholders if that becomes an issue ;-).
There are tradeoffs in how we view and manage this looking from the outside in - to limit big business fairly at the legislative level can also impact small businesses, and potentially much more devastatingly so. That's an area that has to be tread very carefully. Having watched and considered some of the proposals here in the US to distribute wealth more "fairly", partly by penalizing and limiting the "corporate/capitalistic" system (and considering how they might impact me), I'm fearing greatly for millions of small businesses and communities that could be killed off overnight by such moves, leaving *only* big corporations and the factory worker model in its' wake - kind of a tragic irony of the supposed intent that only business owners (not lawyers/legislators) seem to see... but that's a topic for another day/conversation.
If that happens, Reaper could be the last of that underground concept in the audio industry instead of one of the first...but let's hope instead it sets a new standard in customer involvement, responsiveness and support; and has the continued freedom to follow the business model that works best for their company.

Sorry Vin, I went of half-cocked their, I wasn't saying that you were hyping anything yourself. Apologies for that.
Re the support, yes the Steinberg internet forum doesn't get things moving as it should, but there are real people who have been given real jobs answering phones in many languages that forms part of the $3-400 they'll get wholesale for Cubase and although written manuals aren't the be all and end all, they cost money to write and again jobs are created doing this stuff. Seeing as it is a physical products there are warehouse jobs and space to pay for too.
So even though the $60 for a non-commercial Reaper license is cheap compared to a full version of Cubase and slightly cheaper than Tracktion, Samplitude Music Studio and others, there aren't any overheads to speak of in that and so it is a potentially lucrative business (or maybe it is already?). Nothing wrong with that at all, and I hope they all do well out of it, but I can't attribute any swashbucklingly altruistic values to the business model like some seem to.

Hey Cap,
No problem Mate..
RE some of the other points being made about big companies forgetting about how to behave like smaller companies, etc., well of course as the companies get bigger the logistics of running the ship shift and get far more complicated , however, forgetting the most basic principle of your clients being your greatest assets should never be one of the shifts of focus IMO, which does happen more and more as companies get bigger.
I too run a small business which has more in common to Justins approach , lower overhead with focus on the product and clients more than the industry so to speak , but I do have to note that a lot of the companies involved in the audio industry are not big at all, and many would be surprised just how small most are . Many are one man shows, quite a few would have less than a dozen or even a few dozen in total , there is only a small number that would fit the mold of sustaining larger employee numbers.
I do agree that physically employing people to answer phones, etc, will in some way justify the higher pricing, no argument there , never has been an argument, my only comment there is that in all of the years that I have been dealing with "support" personal , the number that actually could find their arse in a well lit room I could count on one hand , the number that are a total and utter waste of time , and are in fact detrimental would number in the many dozen. The money could be better spent IMO...
I keep reading opinions that Reaper may eventually get so big that the developers will need to address their MO to accommodate that fact , I personally don't believe that is the case , if anything, I am seeing more and more software companies using a similar approach of Reaper in delivering its content at the commercial level in regards to electronic only delivery, minimal to no advertising, etc. Having personally dealt with Justin numerous times I doubt no matter how big it gets over the next few years, his approach will change one iota , also he is already bringing more and more devs into the circle to accommodate its growing end user requested feature set, and is maintaining and expanding the incredibly good will and re-pour with the end users and community, which I noted earlier in the thread. It is something that all companies, big and small can learn from , and I hope to see more of it, not less , as I believe that will help support and benefit the industry more than the current dumbing down, box mover mentality that I am seeing increase over the years..
the number that actually could find their arse in a well lit room I could count on one hand , the number that are a total and utter waste of time
True. I generally don't even bother with expecting support for gear anymore, but happy to see it when it happens.

Haven't had one in 4 years. But with the "extra" time, I can get to bed at a decent time, I have time to work out and stay healthly, get laid, hang out with friends and keep my place organized and clean.

My experience as well, you start wasting so much time with bugs and issues that it's sometimes worth switching. For me the solution is Samplitude ATM - Reaper doesn't cut it although the update looks nice.
Did you get the PT Complete upgrade kit? All of sudden you can mix 128 tracks in surround and edit score with Sibelius light notation editor. Starting to look really nice! Waiting for Digi to release 64 bit drivers though( slotools.. will take time), but I will get a PTLE solution soon( I run M-powered these days using the crappy Transit device as a dongle)
I'm really trying hard to like Reaper, but can't get myself to use it..

I haven't gotten the Upgrade kit yet, but I am soon. PT8 is pretty solid, and at 128 tracks it is pretty nice.
I am not worried about 64 bit for PT as I don't use it for midi. I still use Nuendo 3 for midi.
I think if Reaper changes their editing mode, it will change it major.
Cursor editing is such a pita.

No but I don't use Nuendo for audio anymore. I use Pro Tools.

What's it feel like to have input metering on individual audio channels?
I see a piano roll type editor for MIDI. How different is it from Cubendo? What features are still missing from the MIDI side of the app. that prevent you from using it?
I don't use PT for midi.
LEX
Input metering. Can't live without it.
Just my personal prefs here:
1 - processing options similar to the Logical editor;
2 - quantize options also in a default/dropdown menu, not just a popup menu (and remove the popup from the only key command for quantize - may be in
3 - Decklink support (not a midi feature, but necessary for my work)
4 - edit mode equivalent (the markers to cues option is interesting for work later in a project, but haven't had time to dig into it much)
5 - warp tempo from dragging bar lines instead of adapting bar lines/measures to tempo change nodes, though it's really getting there - when the alternate ramp functions are implemented, it's going to be an interesting alternative - to have a bezier tempo ramp vs. Nuendo's linear/make your own, is quite attractive.
6 - better handling/setup of multi-timbral VSTi's - a bit more convoluted than Nuendo - I seem to recall some midi channel mapping head scratchers in v2, but haven't tried it in v3 yet.
Other than that, Reaper 3 really has taken a big step forward in general and is a very impressive app. I actually hope to have some time in a few weeks to put it to the test just to see what I miss, and what I don't.
The biggest reason now is that I can do all of this and audio work I need to in Nuendo, so switching doesn't make sense yet. If Reaper exceeds what I use Nuendo for, then I'll seriously consider it. There are already advantages to Reaper (and a few little bugs - fullscreen doesn't minimize/un-full screen without starting playback, which seems to also require clicking the screen to restore focus - tends to create "ghost" menu/top bar images then too, but only on my main DAW - fine on the laptop. Going into full screen is fine on both).
Where did I say you did? :eusa_eh:
I'm refering to Reaper as compared to Cubendo. :icon_biggrin:
I don't use Reaper for Midi.

But 32 midi ports is limiting but better. 64 would be idea.

Very well said. The more I think about it, the more I want to buy Reaper, if for no other reason than to help support it. As soon as I can get around to it, I'll do that. Even if (as LEX does) I only use it for sound design, it'll certainly be worth the money anyway.

Haven't had one in 4 years. But with the "extra" time, I can get to bed at a decent time, I have time to work out and stay healthly, get laid, hang out with friends and keep my place organized and clean.
It also leaves me time to wax my car and enjoy it as well.
I think those things are pretty important when I look back and see all the time I lost with all the problems.
LEX
Come to think of it, I haven't had but ONE real vacation during the past 30+ years, and that was over 20 years ago. Recently though, I've been integrating into my life, more of the "extra time" things you mention. I think that's a really good idea. Maybe I'll manage to figure out a way to take a real vacation every now and then too.
Hey wait. Didn't they just release 3.0? LOL, SB could only hope for this kind of efficiency. Anyone for that matter.

I don't even think they know that kind of efficiency is possible.
At the rate Reaper is progressing, it will bypass Nuendo 6 before Nuendo 5 is released, and ProTools 9 before 8.2 is out.

Personally I think the problems start when a company decides it needs money to expand and the only way to get that money is to float the company on the stock market. From that point onwards the directors then have 3 sets of people to keep happy - the staff, the stockholders and the customers. I have worked for companies that have, in my opinion, made decisions which are bad for the long term stability and growth of the company, in order to satisfy the short-term expectations of the stockholders (i.e. share price).
This is why, I think, big companies suffer problems to which small companies seem immune. In order to get big they had to sell shares.
Simon.

Holy Hell Batman.
They are kicking ASS and taking names, daily.
So Nuendo sits in the discount bin, while users suffer daily problems and issues while this just keeps getting better and better every day.
I'd say Reaper will be pretty well along by the time N5 is released.
Though, Reaper will have released 20 fixes by the time the first N5 update is released.
Probably will be even V4 by then.

Hmm - it seems Reaper just handles sample rate the right way from the start. I never bother to try it given past experience and usually stick with one sample rate for a full project, but Nuendo can't SRC at output can it? It just maps to the wrong sample rate.
I agree Lex - Reaper 4 by the time N5 is out, maybe before.

I might mix/master on this. Time will tell, but I love there approach to their business if nothing else.

Automation is something I'm watching as well. It isn't there yet (or I haven't found how to enable it), but the hooks are there for bezel curves and interpolating thinned automation data to curves - I don't know if that means Reaper actually puts automation on a mathematical curve, or if the GUI just shows one for convenience - I'm guessing that former since there is little point in making the GUI representation look nice without the data following.
That could be a pretty big step above Nuendo. Just add fill, virgin territory, preview and a few other capabilities now in N's new system and Reaper would be on the way to competing reasonably for a lot of people.
I would like to see a bit more tidy track and folder handling (collapse folders completely, not just shortened track heights), as well as the routing setup for VSTis - midi and audio - still a pain to sort through tracks and find what you need unless you spend time adding icons and color coding everything - too time consuming currently.
Still a very impressive app.

Is it really possible for a couple of guys to program this much? Is it moving so fast that it will warp space and fold in on itself? Yikes!
-Paul
I'm genuinely very impressed by this company. I tried Reaper 2, although impressive I couldn't use it as it didn't work as well as Nuendo/Cubase/ for the things I needed to do.
Yesterday I downloaded 3, and so far it's looking good. Granted I haven't delved in too deeply yet, but I do think that with the amount of work they are doing on it, and how they treat their customers they could get quite big!
B
Is it really possible for a couple of guys to program this much?
No QA managers, no Dept Mgr looking over your shoulder, telling you what code to work on. No CEO giving you "direction" that you don't need. No CFO telling you how empty the coffers are.
Damn straight. In the old days, I was involved in a few projects like this. Some limiting factors are how long you can stay awake, how many times you can run "make" before you wig out, and how long your wife will continue to sleep with you if you're not...um...sleeping with her.
Obviously there are some major features that aren't there yet in Reaper. It also remain to be seen whether they can implement them as fast and efficiently as other changes.
Some of what is in 3.05 is minor by comparison to something like Decklink support, video thumbnails on the timeline (assuming they can easily separate audio/video onto separate tracks), Eucon support, better integration of preferences, options and general GUI layout (better folder handling, etc). It could take a year or more just to get that in place.
I'm optimistic given that their track record is far better than any other company's so far, but it's hard to give it a direct comparison just yet. Let's just say my fingers are crossed. I'm all for viable alternatives.
Nuendo has had several years, and two previous applications to build on, but obviously, development and bug fixes are moving at a glacial pace compared to Reaper. Many features in Nuendo are more advanced from a general application standpoint (not programming necessarily), but it is taking a very long time to make them stable, reliable, and hence, usable.
Someone still needs to really take advantage of the skinning options and come up with a killer skin - that alone can have a noticeable impact on how easy it is to work with Reaper - some are getting close, but still need to come up with a clever way of enhancing workflow with graphics.
Folders still need improving. I wish Reaper would just adopt Nuendo's layout and graphic approach to folders. Tracks also need better type deliniation. The idea that any track can contain any media (yes, you can mix midi and audio data on the same track) is cool, but confusing for large projects. I need to be able to better distinguish midi from audio tracks at a glance, and have folders appear as folders, not remain parent tracks, and easily identifiable. Folders are a huge organizational timesaver in Nuendo, esp. when you have hundreds of tracks to contend with.

the way to differentiate tracks is to use either colours or a track icon.If you always colour your midi tracks brown for example and your audio tracks blue then that's an easy way,it's your choice :D
Folders in reaper are more than just holders for tracks, they act like busses too so putting your drum tracks into a folder also routes them to the folder like a bus.
I actually use folders a lot more in reaper than I do in Cubendo. Also form a management point of view REapers ability to hide tracks in the arrange/and/or mixer windows cuts down on a lot of clutter for me.
One other point V3.05 has had some great optimisations regarding performance, my 100 track test song has dropped form 60% CPU down to about 48% so tha's worth noting for anyone with an older version.

+1 on that. I'll never understand that approach from an ethical standpoint, or a marketing one.

Hi MC - yes, I did know that, and that is powerful in some respects, but at the moment, it is also a significant pain to setup with multichannel VSTi's. I can make it work, but it's much more time consuming to setup in Reaper, and requires more thought when moving between tracks working on midi parts - some of that is a matter of getting used to the way Reaper handles this, but some aspects could be made more convenient and faster to setup.
To differentiate track types, colors can work to a degree, but in my template I break down sections by color, so using colors for midi vs. audio wouldn't work as well. In my workflow, colors are a subset of track type, and icons are just an enhancement of either, but not a replacement for quick visuals of GUI similarities.
The potential is greater imo with Reaper's implementation, I would just like to see a built in option to speed up the process so I don't have to setup color codings to manage everything.
And coloring tracks also depends on the skin as well - color coding only works in the track title bar when the GUI uses an opaque tcp_bg graphic (v3 default skin ). Solvable, but it takes some tweaks to alter it for that use - not difficult by any means - but for quick visual of a 300+, multi-folder template, another graphic differentiation would greatly improve things, for me at least.
Reaper has incredible potential already built in, and it is developing at warp speed already, so I know some of this may just be a matter of time.
Actually, in thinking about it, just having an "autofill" of sorts for track types to use certain icons would be great. The customizable gui, colors and icons leave plenty of room for creating a look that works best for the individual user, as long as I don't have to select an icon for each track one by one. :-)

yes i don't think I've ever reached the heady heights of 300 tracks, but I know what you mean.
The VSTI thing is a bit wierd at first but I've just come back to trying Reaper V3 and I didn't find it a problem this time, its just a few more mouse clicks i think to organise the routing. However, you only need to do this once for your VSTI's and then just save them as a track template, that way its just one click to have stylus RMX and 8 channels all routed and ready to go.
I've been a staunch steinberg user all my working life but there's something about reaper that has me strangely enticed.
I did a project about 18 months ago on it and got up to speed,I remember going back to cubendo for the next project and finding it clunky, which surprised me as I thought I was fast.
I loved being able to move things around with the number pad 8 for up,2 for down, 4 and 6 for backwards and forwards zoom dependant, made comping very quick. I'd just make a time selection on a track, hit shift+s to snip the bit I wanted then hit the '2' or '8' key to drop it onto my comp track,no holding down ctrl and dragging to keep aligned :-)
Anyway it's certainly different :D

Well, remember unlike an unnamable, your request will be listened too.
I think Reaper needs more suggestions and advice from more power users at the moment.
Then, we'll see it rocket past Mars in a matter of months, not decades.

Ditto.
re: key commands - Reaper does seem to have some advantages there already (some kc's that aren't in Nuendo that I have wanted for quite a while). I haven't had time to setup an xkeys profile and custom commands for a full session yet, but can see some great potential there.
There are other areas that also have me very interested as well.
Maybe sometime this summer I can block out to give Reaper a deeper run through.

I think part of the problem for a new user is to realise, Reaper is very powerful under the hood and it's also very customisable,so it's advisable to spend a couple of days setting it up how you want it to work. The key commands and macro's mean you can set up a very powerful workflow if you know what you want and I'm sure with an XKeys it would be superb. I'm thinking of getting one for this very reason,I'm still on the fence as to weather or not to start my next project in Reaper :-) if I do then an Xkeys and some time spent working out what i do most will be very useful in setting up a smooth and fast workflow.
MC
Highly recommend the x-keys, or two. Can't live without it, esp when I can put carpel tunnel-inducing 3 and 4 key commands and macros in it, saving the keyboard for shorter kc's.

XKeys +10000.
Though, if I have to change my Xkeys layout, I have the big one, so that I can have N3 and reaper on the one.
It is also great for Pro Tools and works really well.
The cool thing about a Mac though is you can assign KC within the OS to work with any program, and it shows up in the menu too.
So anything that isn't assign in PT that I want, I do it in the OS and there it is.

Since it got deleted at N.com for being OT (and it was), I'll repost my observation here:
Reaper will add a video track, Decklink support and ADR overlay features before Nuendo adds it's planned ADR features (5.2?).
Another really freaky aspect of Reaper, when you update, you don't have to trash preferences, templates, etc. And it installs in 3 seconds, launches in 1.5. Weird.

Not to mention managing to install without flooding the registry with crap , the only other DAW I have seen do that is SAW.
SAW install was drag and drop folder into preferred directory .., you could pretty much do the same with Reaper.. :D
My favorite new feature is the Spaghetti cormorant.
* Solo: fixed glitches when unsoloing with routing and PDC

* TCP/Mixer: create sends by dragging IO button to another track
You don't see those often. Glad it's getting some much needed attention here.

One of the great things is, fixes are integrated into publicly available betas regularly for those that need them well before official updates like this.
This in contrast to the Steinberg approach of making public that fixes have been implemented in the betas and will be available to the user in ... ohhh, lets say 3 - 6 months.
Maybe a reintroduction of the public beta program at Steinberg would be a good thing

The pace at which they are releasing updates for Reaper really make Reaper the DAW of the future.
Granted there are things that we still want it to do, but 18 days from version 3.06 to 3.10.
Wow.
Steinberg must be working hard on Sequel and Syncstation.
By the time Nuendo 5 is out, the non working version, Reaper will be deep into Version 4 and working.

I actually find the pace of the Reaper updates annoying. I don't use it on a regular basis but it seems every time I do there is a new version to download (which I don't always bother with). OK if the updates are fixing problems and adding the occasional new feature but is there really that much wrong with it that we need an update per week? :eusa_think:
Also I just can't be bothered to wade through the swathe of changes and new features availabe all the time. Often it seems they are adding a new menu command or changing a preference that just ends up being confusing. :willy_nilly:
Now Steinberg is at the other extreme but at least you get used to working with a consistent platform. Somewhere in between Steinberg and Reaper for update times would be ideal.

I think you are .01 percent of the user base that feels that way, and your job with Nuendo must be minimal at best.
Talk to the guys who use Nuendo to make their living!
I am sure they would be more than happy to BBQ you on the problems and issues they have dealt with over the past 2 years.
I am sure our combine billable hours would be 50 times your annual salary.
I am feeling a BETA drone here. It would be a typical response from a BETA drone who doesn't like updates.
Dealing with the work arounds in Nuendo is far more time consuming than a menu change.
That is the best you got?
Anyone else with me?

the solution for you is pretty easy really.
Just check in whenever you think an update should be due, sounds like around 6 months by your own reckoning of somewhere in between Reaper and Nuendo.
Personally I prefer the rapid Reaper system of fixes available as they are implemented.

Seems a bit unecessary to me :icon_no: Unless there are loads of bugs that keep needing to be fixed. If it's mainly new features then I need a month or so. But yes I am a light user of Reaper so maybe I am the minority.
All these updates are not just about bugs. REAPER is a constantly growing application with an evolving feature set. It gets better and better with every version as every release and every new feature is tested and discussed by a huge user base in conjunction with the developers. Thus bugs fixes and optimizations are implemented almost instantly.
And that is the beauty of this system. The user has the choice. You don't have to update to the bleeding edge version if an older version works for you. Every update is fully optional. Just read the release notes and decide if the added feature set and the bug fixes of a release are worth the risk of breaking something. If not, just skip the version. Simple. If you only want to update twice a year you are free to do so too.
It is all about choice and communication.

Most if not all of those updates are in direct response to issues reported by the end user base in the period previous to the last , and also its a 3 MB download that is simply run over the top of the previous installation , without fear of it killing previous preferences and configurations..
Absolute no brainer , if you don't need the regular updates , then update when ever you feel you want or need to.
I see that list of V2 updates and can only applaud , the version 3 updates schedule is equally as impressive.
I have had personal issues that I have reported to Justin privately, addressed within hours , were with Steinberg its more the case of any issues reported is dismissed and/or denied for years.
Not even in the same universe , Rock On Reaper !!
I guess for those of us waiting for years for Nuendo updates and even what could be simple "hot-fixes", Reaper is a bit like the "kid in a candy store" to see at least (I still use Nuendo mainly).

Sorry dude, but that's a ridiculous argument. For two reasons:
1) As we all know most software contain bugs. As a professional it's our job to figure out if the features we need are being touted as included in the software we want to buy. Once we've bought it, the next step is to see if they are there and actually functioning correctly. If they aren't, we are owed by the manufacturer fixes to make it work according to how the product was said to work. The software either does what you need it to do or it doesn't. So in this case, your argument is weak, because you're simply "considering" that Reaper perhaps is more flawed because of all the updates. But the important point is "is it?". That's where we need to be in terms of discussing this particular point. Not; "is there really that much wrong with it that we need an update per week? ". Just use the software and you'll know.
2) With Reaper you have an option:
a) You update when they're available, to fix bugs and/or extend functionality.
b) You don't update because it's working fine for you.
So your concern about being annoyed has absolutely nothing to do with Reaper itself, or how the updates are being rolled out because you can choose yourself whether to update or not.
Compare this to SB where you're stuck waiting for years for features to get fixed in their most expensive product while they're dicking around with their least expensive products to sell to the non-pro's.......
If that difference isn't obvious.....!?....

SO because they listed 3.102 fixes it is in with 3.1 fixes it is the same?

Maybe it's easier to read from the bottom of the list up. It was the spaghetti cormorant that gave it away. Unless I'm misunderstanding your post? The list of fixes for version 3.102 contains all the fixes for 3.1 as well. Not saying this is a problem but the list looks more impressive than it actually is.
It lists the additions in the 3.1+ update.
Perhaps they listed it that way for a reason. I don't see the problem.
Of the 5 percent of Nuendo users left, only about 2 percent of the upgraded to 4.3.
So what is your point of your post. Because of the constant delay of Nuendo's releases 95 percent of the user base has bailed.
Why is that good?

No point really. I'm not a Steinberg fanboy or a Reaper fanboy. Just adding a bit of logic to the argument. For sure I'd like to see Steinberg get their act together some more. But the Cockos guys can use their own brand of marketing spin to good effect by this kind of thing. There is an element of making it up as he goes along which I can't see lasting forever. There has to be some kind of consolidation, which i guess does happen to some extent at the whole number revisions. We'll see.
Personally I'm doubtful about upgrading to Nuendo 5. Looking like I may go to Cubase 5. If Reaper works its way into my system though I may never go back or up.

Far enough. Considering Nuendo is basically a ghost now, Reaper has caught the attention of ALOT of other DAW users.
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with updates. The more the better and as stated, you don't have to update.
Nuendo 5, I doubt there is going to be alot of people who upgrade to it. Maybe toward the end of its life cycle, but in the beginning maybe a handful of people.
The majority of users will use 4.3, and wait for the rest of the beta (public beta) to complete itself.
This says alot about the product.
Reaper on the other hand, you know you can state a problem and not be ignored and it will likely be fixed in the next update.
That is service. That alone has driven a bunch of Nuendo users to Reaper. Fredo has driven and bunch as well as to Digi.

They only ever repeat items like this when they do a quick fix just after a new release. You can tell when they do this because they use the 3rd digit after the decimal point.
They don't repeat items when they do updates where the 2nd digit after the decimal point changes.

Even smarter.
This is basically a 3.101/102 hotfix for things they found after putting 3.1 out - something we never see with Nuendo. We just wait 18 months for the next "n.y" release.
REAPER 3.103 - August 27, 2009
Changes: Morsels of goodness
* x64 version: 32-bit VST bridging support
* MIDI list editor: fixed possible duplicate event creation when filter on
* Render: disabled opening project from shell during render
* MIDI list editor: fixed inline editing of pitch values
* VST: better audioMasterGetOutputLatency reporting when stopped
* VST: reverted 3.1 optimization that seemed to cause problems with a few plug-ins
* VST: special case for Fretted Synth
Especially the first point is interessting.

The second last one is also interesting,
They had tried some optimisations that proved not beneficial in some instances, and simply reverted back to the earlier state . Compare that to Steini fixing one thing while breaking 2 , and then waiting x amount of months to address it.
I wonder how efficient the 32 Bitbridge is , time for some testing..

Well it takes SB x months to figure out there is a problem, even though it is widely reported.
Then once they "give in" to it and realize they can't sweep the bug under the rug it takes another x months to find where that part of the code is in the software.
Then once they locate it, they have to figure out how to re program it.
It is kind of like a dog chasing its tail. Once it knows it is there, it will go in circles until dizzy and stops.
Then do it again until it forgets there is a tail there.

It just doesn't get much more impressive in the audio world than what Reaper is doing.
Steinberg and even Apple (Logic) should be embarrassed at the snail's pace they are moving at with fixes by comparison.
Yes. I find it amazing to see how Justin (the owner/developer of Reaper) constantly releases intermediate versions of the brand new 64/32bit bridge when customers report problems with some plugins. And everything happens in the public - visible to everyone, no harmful words, no aggressions and no thread erasing.
I've had problems with some plugins in Nuendo for over 2 years now, and Omnisphere for almost a year (have barely used it since I got it last fall), and still no fixes from any involved developers.
All are fine in Reaper though, and when there are problems for some users (not even for *all* users), Justin fixes them in a few days at most.
I know it really can't be that difficult to fix some of the bugs in Nuendo - the process is what is killing Steinberg, at least in terms of speed and effectiveness at addressing customer needs vs. marketing illusions.
REAPER 3.104 - August 29, 2009
Changes: Incremental love
* MIDI editor: fixed shift+click for multiple selection in piano roll
* MIDI editor: fixed unlooped item marquee selection past end of item
* Updated libvorbis to 1.2.3
* Temporary removal of experimental VST bridging

And I for one am really going to try to live with Reaper as my DAW. I'm going to see whether or not I can take the position that whatever it doesn't have (yet), I can live without, even though I have had no takers on my Nuendo license. Life's too short for me to spend it fiddling around with software bugs in a piece of code from a company that doesn't care about addressing my requirements.

Well that's my take sort of.
I hope at once there would be and "all in one" DAW, but there isn't.
So I've moved to multiple.
Nuendo 3 for Midi. Even though I own Cubase 5, currently with the crappy automation system that is in it, it isn't even worth the upgrade.
There is really no point in upgrading to Nuendo4 for me as there is still a ton of issues and problems, even though 4.3 is a solid release based on the user base.
Pro Tools for post production completely. All editing and delivery is in PT and will never change.
Doesn't matter what they put in N5, I'll never go to Nuendo at this point for Post.
It is a huge waste of time, and Steinberg doesn't understand, still, the needs of a Post Production house.
Reaper. While I still have some operational issues with Reaper, Reaper is my "DAW to watch", and my sound design DAW.
Eventually, I'll probably move to mixing in reaper instead of Nuendo or Cubase, because it just works.
There comes a time when you have to ask yourself if it is worth the time to deal with all the problems, the non support, non updates, and an arrogant unofficial forum staff.
Steinberg had an opportunity to really shine IMO, but the decided to take the "user is wrong" path and basically shove a stick up everyones ass.
Unfortunately, I doubt this will change so there is only one choice.
Move on to something, in part basically all Audio, to a company that understands and updates based on the REAL WORLD user needs, not some marketing guys "Idea" which 99 percent of the time, doesn't work or isn't a real need anyway, considering the real needs are left out of the program.
And the users have been asking for years for it.
Bottom line. Getting work done, or losing time trying to figure out why it doesn't work right.
As stated before, I'm out of the Steinberg business. Midi wise, I don't know yet.
I may eventually migrate to C5. But currently it is kind of worthless as well.
Had they done the automation right, I'd probably use it. At this point, it is the same as it was in C4.
The new automation panel is just a gimmick, and completely worthless.
Total crap.
So, I don't blame you for wanting to move to something that actually has working features, and a company that understands the needs of their users.
Steinberg. They don't give 2 shits about their users. We are all suckers in their eyes and we all don't know what we are talking about either.

Lex,
I think youve got it down. So true
Got to say (hope not out of line) I have used cubase since mid 90's, vst, mainly for midi and recording externally. Went to SX3 thanks to a h2o but was never quite satisfied with any sequencer/audio recorder on the market. Loyalty got the better of me and went from C4 then to C5...regretting it but then there isn't a lot out there that seems to be a decent alternative. Reaper seems to be the flavour of choice at the moment...but I am not going to spend more money until I can see it is really worth it.
So C5 for the moment and if C6 upgrade is more than Ģ100 when it arrives then my money will probably go to another company.
In my view SB seem to be taking the wrong direction as far as end users requirements. They seem to miss a lot of features that are on the horizon and not invest properly in the right people to get released features working.
Better routing on the mixer interface/adaptability of the channels it to move 1 strip manually to another possition, j-bridge ompatibility, inserts for vsti's and I am sure the list goes on. I love the routing possibilities in Reason but the sequencer is shite and rewire is hardly magic or reliable when saving projects. The pseudo intelligence of parts within tracks (ie a sample name in grooveagent is assigned to a key yet open beat designer and everything has to be relabelled), saving settings or exporting projects and its components is missing yet very important for backing up projects or to transport to another PC. Ableton live for its audio manipulation and different approach to mixing is amazing but I find the midi implementation slack. Yet all these functions should really be present and slick in cubase.
Maybe reaper will be the next step...we will see...I would like to see better integration of all the core components within any DAW.
Overall my utopia is nowhere for my money...but to be creative with sound I can still take the wooden spoon, pots and pans and make some noise like I did when I was 5 years old!
Shame SB have taken the wooden spoon by natural selection - wonder if theyl'l wake up and focus on development rather than markerting, after all their promotion at NAMM of loopmash and vari vocal was diabolical.
I like to ramble - now back to the muse....

I hope he gets deeping into the midi. Cubase was driving me nuts over back to back 16 hr days with mute/solo glithes.
The things I use the logical editor for with shortcuts...... I don't want to be without. If he had those, I'd be seriously considering it.
Still, I think I'll try some audio mixes on it over the coming weeks when I have more time to mess around.

The plugin firewalling is an excellent idea. Plugins can be individually tagged in the FX browser to run as...
Seperate Process - a process that runs all plugins set to this in different process from host.
Dedicated Process - a new, individual process for each plugin set to this.
Native - in the main host process like every other host.
... I can confirm that it works and a plugin that will crash on load up is allowed to die without affecting anything else.
I'm going to give this a good try out, the last time I did was with the v3 pre-release which was a work in progress and I never liked v2.x.
Any more of this and the forum will have to be renamed Cubeardo or something. :)

I've been playing around with V3 for a couple of months now.I've bought a behringer BCF and BVR2000.With the BCR I have my go to EQ's;URS neve,API and Channle strip pro along with T-Racks pultec mapped to the knobs. When I open the plugin GUI I can control my plugs with the BCR,Reaper just lets the hardware only control whichever plug's GUI is open.
On the BCF I use one of the extensions mentioned to hide/show selected tracks,so if I want to say, work on 6 drum tracks along with bass DI and mic, I just select those tracks then hit a key and everything else dissapears in the TCP and Mixer and my BCF jumps to those tracks only.
I really miss those things when I work in Cubendo :D

The embedded scripting engine is cool too. This might lead to massive increase of available extensions. :icon_biggrin:

:D :D
Great stuff on this list, especially the menu customization is brilliant - no more cluttered menus. :icon_biggrin:
But what I really love are the minor fixes that show how the developers listen to the user base. Ie the small enhancement "Take names: automatically focus take name field when displaying item properties" just makes the application flow when cutting and arranging items. Wonderful. Compare this to the clumsy keyboard handling of the new Cubase5 dialogs where you have to stomp on the tab key a thousand times just to reach the OK button (export dialog comes to mind among several others). And nobody cares at Stonehenge. :eusa_wall:

Its my backup DAW at the moment. I wish they would get the MAC version on equal parity with the PC version since Im still on the Mac for the moment
Reaper has taken over my laptop almost completely after the latest updates. It just gets better and better. Cubase is installed too on this machine but it doesn't get much use anymore. It just feels good sitting in a train or plane and play around with some musical ideas without having to worry about a little blue 2k wart sticking out of the back of the computer.
This way I can bury my dongle deep in my suitcase or leave it at home all together.
Been asking for this one:

Hey Stev,
Yeh it is, but don't let that stop you, at least its an official public BETA , unlike some others .. :eusa_whistle:
Its still in the SUCK stage on the Mac, trust me, Im using a Mac here and it blows right now, I dont use it, just keep updating it
I bought it for a portable recording DAW
Used 3.13 on a location recording last night (choir recording to pop/R&B track) as I didn't have time to load up Cubase/Nuendo and didn't want to risk the dongle. Took 4 reboots to get it to finally work with the RME Fireface on my laptop. Locked up twice after that.
Take handling has some good ideas, but overall, it sucks. It's a pain having to drag out partial take fragments to see where overwritten takes are. I'm sure there is a way to work with it - such as always recording in specific sections (loop-based tracking), overdub points, and never starting a recording part way back into a previous take, etc, but for record-as-you-go pressure sessions, not good.
Reaper has some great features, great ideas, and great development speed, but it just doesn't operate like it was developed for, or by, professional audio engineers with a sense for workflow.

Hey Dedric,
Bummer to hear you had such a bad time of it with Reaper on the location gig, so I take it the Fireface/Notebook combo has worked perfectly on location gigs before ?
FWIW: I have a Reaper/RME MADI powered i7 rig installed in the Recital Center here in Melbourne, doing mission critical classical recordings, huge track counts, hours at a time, without a hitch , but obviously that is not a mobile rig, as such, although it can be moved around if needed.
It would be interesting to nail down what is causing the glitch.
Reaper worked fine with the Fireface in the studio - tested it and setup my routing, I/O, tracks, etc before the session - tested it a few times actually - maybe some other device that was no longer connected (LAN, Skype phone, etc) was interferring with ASIO init.
At first I feared the firewire port had gone south during transport, setup. Not sure why it had problems - connections were fine, but maybe it was just stuck in a weird state until a few reboots cleared it.
Didn't really blame Reaper for that. A laptop config isn't my idea of ultimate reliability for a critical session, but there wasn't budget to rent a hardware hybrid setup, or more preferrably, a location engineer to track for me so I could direct.
My biggest complaint with Reaper on this session (or rather editing after the fact), is multiple take handling overall, but I'll have to sort that out Monday in editing before transferring back into Nuendo. There are some cool aspects there - such as key command tabbing through takes within a clip, but the way it overwrites clips instead of layering above/below overlapped takes sucks - couldn't find a pref to change that, but maybe it's buried in the menu somewhere.
Like I say, it is a cool app in many respects - I still want to like and use it more than I do, and want to see it improve (and no doubt it will); but until it has decent folders, take management and MUCH faster and more elegant multimbral/multi-out VSTi handling, it will be a cool app I'll have to watch more than use - for my needs at least. ymmv of course.

x64: fixed bugs in recording and rendering format selection/configuration windows
So, 3.14 broke video play back, and a couple of weeks later, it's fixed (at least it works on my laptop with the video files I had here to test with). Took Steinberg 15(?) months to fix video truncation. Took Justin 2 weeks to fix completely broken video. Hmm.... think I might have to have him take a look at my car.
Even though Reaper lacks some things I need, it's development and bug fix process is very very impressive. There are also some impressive skins being developed by users now. Reaper is here to stay.
It looks like the code base of REAPER is be very clean too - no dirty tricks, no invasive copy protection etc. :icon_cool:

Still, it is not a good workflow for me at all. I keep trying to use it for mixing and it is so arcane that I don't have the time to invest to get good at it. Last I looked, you couldn't creat your own shortcuts. If I could develop a bunch of those for myself, I would use it more.
I am using it for mastering. I do like the effects layout more than my old Cubase 3.1. Much more versatile.
-Paul
You may be referring to something specific Paul, but the list of customizable key commands is quite large in Reaper, and the extensions add even more - far more then Cubase/Nuendo allow. You can also create custom combinations of commands (not like time-delayed macros, but still quite useful). And the menu system is customizable as well, allowing you to even rename menu items I think.
But, I agree on workflow. Folders and multi-out VSTi handling is a pain - takes 5x longer to setup than Cubendo.

Wow - I haven't looked at reaper since...well... pre v1 days.
I've got the purchase page open, ready to hit the buy button.
I don't see it replacing N4/C5 soon, but it is at a point where its worth learning the workflow, learning its limitations, and identifying how it might improve my working day. Like so many here, I believe that at the speed it is improving, it is certainly the current audio app to watch.
(I used energy XT for a number of years prior to V2... and loved some of the things that a one man developer could do - and some extremely original ideas that really benefitted me that unfortunately went by the wayside with v2 and v2.5, which I no longer contemplate using. It was for the time a way of producing "Max" like results without much of the headaches in programming max. Max for Live (and Max for Live plugin, which looks to be coming) is another game changer for sound design.) )
This is so so interesting, that I just read the entire thread, on a day that I have so much work on that I know friday arvo beers will be lucky to occur at 10pm tonight!
Vin - how is the recital hall rig going? I'm actually REALLY glad to hear it being used in an environment like that.
Cheers - looking forward to playing with it as soon as I get a short break!

It is amazing. REAPER needs 6s to start up after a fresh reboot, including loading of the last project. Cubase needs way more than a minute to be ready with the same project.
Less than 2 seconds on my laptop to open an empty project.

I especially love the new freely arrangeable mixer. It is just great to show and hide any track as desired and to move any track anywhere you want. Allowing to use folders in the mixer the same way as in the track list is brilliant too. The Cubase mixer just feels clumsy after having used the REAPER mixer for some minutes.

time for me to give Reaper another shot at mixing audio. Being that the DAW performance bench's of Vin's show Reaper as being more efficient with plugs, I'm really hoping it works out that it is a good platform for me to mix on.

How do they do this? They charge so little and give such great support, while others charge so much and leave their customers to dangle. I hope Reaper tears a hole in Steinberg's sales eventually, I am so pissed at Steinberg that I paid them for abandonware such as Halion, and possibly Nuendo, how many more times can Steinberg trot out the same old "First quarter" "beta testing" "final development stage" bullshit?
Reaper rocks, I have been using it on more and more projects because it deserves to get used and supported.

I've just started my latest project with Reaper, spent a couple of days setting up track templates, hardware control for plugins etc few actions/key commands, I've been rockin' this week, no crashes, no problems doing a singer songwriter project, 24/96 acoustic guitars, double bass, piano, EWQLSO playx64, BFD-2 ,kontakt 4 x64 working in reaper x64.
I think I'll mix in reaper 32 as my plugin comps ect are 32bit and when they're bridged the hardware controlling is a bit of a PIA,and I don'tneed massive memory usage when mixing as everything will be audio by that point.
I've been enjoying using the steinberg CC121 in Reaper, works great thanks to Rome's csurf.dll :)

Its still a small team of dedicated guys who have developed and supported it from the ground up , so its not drowning in red tape. The most improtant aspect I believe is the founder and lead developer is still hands on, with Steinberg once Charlie lost the reigns, it lost its heart and direction IMO.

I think the reason why Justin is capable of maintaining this business model is that he is in a enviable financial position to be able to successfully ride it out even if it isn't turning over huge $ .
I see it as someone who has been successful and fortunate enough in business areas, where financials are not an over riding factor , giving back to the community.

What does REAPER have to offer you?

Reaper is getting to be a contender on the music production side of things. As much as I like Nuendo, and used it and championed it for years, I never even boot it up any more, and I have noticed on recent sessions that Logic has taken over among songwriters and Cubase is nowhere to be seen. It may be coincidence but every gig or session I have done in the last couple of years is a room or stage full of Protools and Logic. I show Reaper to everyone now, it is a no brainer to buy I think, especially as you don't have to carry a dongle or serial number, and it has an amazing track record for support.

Yes, sure does. Incidentally, during the development of this release, I was giving Reaper another workout and I posted about an issue I was encountering re visibility of sends in the mixer. I was upfront and told them that I didn't have a license (then), but this was an important thing for me and a few days later they had sorted it out. (it's the Mixer one in the list).
The spin on that is that they give better service to the general public than Steinberg give to their customers. :D

I'm currently working on a new project and have been using reaper exclusively for a month now and it's performing very very well at 24/96 low latency. Also there's been a good few update in the SWS extensions which if people don't know add amazing actions to reaper ,so are as important almost as the regular updates themselves. A quick example;there are now actions to split which if there's a time selction will split the selection or if there's no selection will split at edit cursor :D so two actions in one new method mapped to whatever key/controler you like :D

Incidentally, to get this up and running, you download the files from here (http://aegiscorp.free.fr/ffmpeg/) and unzip them into the Reaper Program Files directory.
When you next start up Reaper you can export sections of video and use QT in the 64 bit version too!

Hi there, First post to this great site,
Has anyone jumped from N4.3 to Reaper for doing the score to video thing? I've been following Reaper's progress and am wondering if it's matured enough in the video department to give it hard think. Because of the impending N5 update and NEK debacle I'm thinking of 'alternatives'. I'm on N4.3 and despite it's flaws it generally works very well for me. I should say I'm not really doing mission critical stuff like broadcast or episodic tv. However, I have hard delivery dates, etc, etc.
Thanks,
Jim
Jim - I can just give you my personal take on it - Reaper is progressing, but seems to be focused more on esoteric key commands than hard functionality built for scoring. For me, ease of VSTi setup, folder implementation, and general GUI workflow just don't compare to Nuendo, and make it hard to consider Reaper even for simple scoring projects. Video support is fine for the most part, but still no scrubbing clips to video a la edit mode in Nuendo.
Cool app in some ways, but it might have to mature to v5 before it's a viable alternative, imho.

It's still worth looking at yourself, everyone has different ideas about workflow.
you can of course download and try it for free , reaper is good like that.

Of course that's a valid point. I bought a license quite a while back and used it a bit for straight ahead tracking. It worked just fine. However, if I'm going to go through a complete paradigm shift with yet another DAW it's got to be an ass kicker for my particular needs. That said I see Reaper as having the potential to be just that. And I'm massively supportive of the developer's business model/concept, etc. When it gets widely accepted in mission critical and especially video related environments I'll be way more than happy to make the switch.
Cheers

The irony is not lost on us that this is the most viewed thread in the entire forum....
They are definitely doing something right.

Reaper is like "The Great American Dream." It is an idea, but at times I seriously wonder if it will be a reality for a majority. In order to get features implemented, one must be vigilant and bring numbers. It can almost feel like Logic's Environment at times; tons of stuff, but it is up to you to weed through it all and set it up for your use. In the end, it lacks in too many aspects, and where it seems like it is doing well, too much time and effort is required to search, ask, set-up, etc. Something as simple as working with a mono audio track or mono VI or mono aux can be... interesting. At the same time, there are threads (including a semi-recent and lengthy one) describing incomplete basic feature sets. Tons of room for user scripting, coding, etc.. but, for someone who simply wants to grab an app and go... well, for me, Cubase 5 for composing and PT7.4 (PT8.??? eventually, since getting it to work on W7x64 has been a no-go for me) for tracking. If I had the time to spend on sculpting Reaper to even do what PT7.4 does, maybe I would.

I can stand to master on it occasionally. I'll try mixing sometime, but every time I try anything, it looks like I'm up against quite a learning curve and then some. Just not intuitive to me much at all. In its current form or anywhere near it, I don't see myself going beyond some basic stems mixing. I like the arrangement of the fx plugs and it seems efficient on resources. Just moving around in a project, though, feels very frumpy and clumsy to me.
Its the one program we'd all love to love, but can't get beyond just a little 'like' and admire it for what its trying to do rather than for what it is fully capable of doing with a smooth workflow.

I just downloaded Reaper and I am doing my best to give it a fair shake.
Parts of it are just impressive. It is so much more efficient than Nuendo with resource utilization that it is in another world on this basis.
Ease of use - after working with it for a full day, I can see that many things just aren't going to be as easy or as straight forward as it is to do many of these same things in Nuendo. Reaper is also missing SO many features that I take for granted in Nuendo. That means severe workarounds to get some things accomplished.
Edit: Reaper has LOTS of features. It is taking me a while to find things. There is no sample editor at this time.
Reaper does have a routing matrix. This is a feature I've asked for in Nuendo and I currently have no hope of ever seeing it happen in Nuendo. The routing matrix in Reaper is somewhat simplistic at this point and not really filled out enough imo. It is at least a good start and it is usable. You will be clicking yourself almost to death in the matrix at this time if you do make much use of it. There are requests in their forum to make some things easier to use in that interface.
Reaper also allows feedback, routing of a send back to the channel/track it came from, or possibly more complex types of feedback situations involving several tracks/channels. Kudos to them. Yes, I'll be careful.
Edit: Won't allow direct feedback to the same channel. You have to route 'round about through other channels. But yes, complex feedback is possible.
With Nuendo, and the near real time waveform drawing it has, I can spot potential anomalies while recording. With Reaper, so far, I cannot be as easily assured of what is going to disk. I'm still verifying settings concerning this feature set though.
Edit: Reaper is not as fast on the draw here for me. I've updated and played around with several settings. It is usable though.
Solo and Mute in Reaper are a bit weird to me, but I can get used to it. The basic functionality is there. It seems to have nowhere near the potential usage that Nuendo has in this regard, if Nuendo would just work 100% properly with Solo and Mute to begin with. :icon_rolleyes:
What does it do nicely? It can record a lot of tracks compared to Nuendo on the same hardware, it keeps a low memory footprint that doesn't get appreciably bigger (with what I'm doing), and it doesn't choke down the CPU or system resources as time goes on while doing it.
I haven't tried comping takes yet with it. I've got to test the ease of use with this before really considering using it on a laptop DAW.
I've not upgraded to N5 yet, and it looks like I'll be waiting. I don't think I'll be moving over to Reaper, but Reaper sure looks promising for laptop use in my situation. More testing to do...

IMO...
Reaper is sort of like Logic in a way. Basic usage can be simple, but as soon as you want to do anything beyond that, there are so many ways to get from "here to there." Without understanding things more.. comparatively, Logic's Environment... it can seem quite daunting, with some things being a matter of taking the time to figure the best way for it to be done for YOUR needs. Or, requesting the devs to implement something. Or, asking and hoping at least one other person has wanted to do what you are trying to accomplish.
I am finding that for my needs, I am needing to dig in pretty deep. I cannot stand the default "look" and layout, and I have yet to see a single Theme that appeals to me enough to use. I do not want bright white, but do nto want black or even dark n dreary. Horizontal meters in the Edit area irk me to no end. My routing desires are different, as is most of my workflow. So.. lotsa work. Every time I have hit a brick wall in a desire, investigation has shown that I simply did not realize a way to accomplish it existed. Definitely not plugn play for me!
Add to that the lack of VariAudio and Audio->MIDI, as well as notation with extended range instrument TAB support.. and refined lyrics track implementation.. well, some of those I can sort of add in as separate apps, possibly integrating them a bit more through the use of dev tools that are available. The one annoying thing is seeing a feature request I really want now just sitting, and with the frequency of updates, checking almost daily to see what is coming to see if what I want is in there.. it is the opposite of Xmas. Part of me prefers the "presents for Xmas and my Birthday" approach, but Reaper is interesting enough I suppose. Certain minor absences can be annoying (at best), but every app has them, no???

Reaper is sort of like Logic in a way. Basic usage can be simple, but as soon as you want to do anything beyond that, there are so many ways to get from "here to there."I'm not finding as many ways as I would hope. Reaper is currently much "lighter" all of the way around, in many ways.
I cannot stand the default "look" and layout, and I have yet to see a single Theme that appeals to me enough to use.I've had a hard time with the supplied theme's as well. I will be investigating additional themes. All of the supplied themes are way too much this or way too much that, and become distracting or difficult to work with. I've tried some changes, but get unexpected results that make me go back to the default theme because you cannot change enough to "get it there".
My routing desires are differentSo far Reaper seems to allow any routing I want that makes sense. I haven't tested far enough yet, but I've got tracks and subgoups going, and I'm going to attempt construction of a complex delay with feedback loops and EQ inside of the loops. Reaper supports "out of the box trips" as well, complete with pings.
I like the "one track/channel" does whatever you want scenario, within some limitations. It is a "one thing does it all" difference that IS really peculiar. That does make the "one track" a little complicated in that it might require some further setting up to get it to work.
It seems you can save templates off of this little bugger when you have a channel strip configured the way you want one for many generic situations, and that is then recallable when you want to add another track. Well if that isn't something close to what I've asked for in Nuendo before too!
The one annoying thing is seeing a feature request I really want now just sittingAnd you can vote only once. I've reviewed some requests that seemingly languish for a lack of votes, if that is truly the reason. I hope this part of things is not entirely vote driven.
Reaper is interesting enough I suppose.I think so too at this point. Here's an app that can run on an older laptop I have, and will be worth it if I can get it to jump through enough hoops, - or is that to be viewed the other way around?
The sound quality seems to be quite well there, and there is a 64 bit version that seems to work quite well, even with the built in 32 to 64 bit bridge.
I've crashed Reaper with one of the Lexicon PCM plugins on a fairly regular basis, and that plugin does not crash in Nuendo, but I don't think Reaper is the problem on this one. I'm not going to report this until after the next Lexicon update comes out and the same problem occurs.
I've not tested all of the built-in plugins, but the eq so far seems to be quite usable and initial results with it are not bad sounding. I still have my UAD-1 plugins though, but not for a laptop.
I will also need to also check into the easiest ways to do monitor mixes.

.
not sure exactly what you are missing when you refer to "lighter", but I am assuming you have not downloaded the sws extension (http://www.standingwaterstudios.com/).
You may find what you are looking for in there.
Good luck playing around.
While the speed of fixes is still impressive, as I've watched Reaper over the past year, the thing that strikes me is that it takes a long time to catch up to the little additions most DAWs already have implemented (see the above fix list for many that have been working in other DAWs for years).
Some feature requests are good (auto-extend midi item when adding notes, though this has been an option in Nuendo for a long time); but there are many that are rather "personalized" for the requesters and not applicable to professional use, or for more than 1 or 2 people who spend a lot of time logging requests for Reaper.
Honestly, Reaper is almost getting too deep to be quickly useful. It was gaining some attention in pro circles, but I'm wondering if that's waned quite a bit in the past year. Presonus' Studio One probably has a better chance at this point as the workflow is far faster than Reaper. It still misses a lot of features, but the basis is much more user-friendly than Reaper.

Installed.
I've still got a lot of reading and testing to do. One day does not make a thorough test, but rather it is good mostly for first impressions that may or may not end up being being the full case. First impressions though, do help to quickly decide if you want to live with something or not. For me, poor initial scores here will quickly result in a trash binning (after I've made sure I'm not overlooking relevancies in the published manuals).
Nuendo works more like I think, give or take a few items. Studio One may do that. Right now, one first impression is an impressive fact, and it is that Reaper so far has been light on resources. That is a HUGE plus atm for what I want.
Right now I am trying to redo an old mix from the ground up staying with Reaper plugins as much as is possible.

That first sentence isthe biggest "con" of Reaper; the second is that it requires so much research to discover if it has what one requires, and how much of a PITA it is to accomplish/perform certain tasks. As far as workflow.. I do not see S1's workflow as faster... for me. But!! I am not doing paid, time-crunch work any more, so what the typical user might desire..

MC
Cockos Incorporated was founded in 2004 as a software development company with philanthropic goals.
The engineers who founded Cockos were tired by the frustration and oppression of working within large
companies. Large public companies often find themselves slaves to their shareholders and while focusing on
money, lose sight of what's really important.
The software development background of Cockos is extensive--our employees have developed end-user
software, software distribution tools, peer-to-peer network and media streaming architectures that are used by
many millions of people (examples include Winamp, NSIS, Gnutella, and SHOUTcast).
Some rules we try to follow:
Give new features to customers quickly: the paradigm of batching updates and then selling them is both a terrible experience for the customer, and detrimental to the quality of the software.
Avoid copy-protection and DRM schemes: these schemes are almost always ineffective, and usually result in a poorer experience for paying customers than for pirates.
Price software reasonably, trust your customers
Resources should be spent on product development whenever possible. To the consumer, this translates to more bang for the buck.
Speaking of bang for the buck - Cockos has published the price structure for new REAPER 4 licenses und upgrades from older versions:
Hello my friends,
We are currently expecting to release REAPER 4 sometime near the end of 2010 or beginning of 2011.
The normal price and terms of REAPER licenses will not change from version 3 to version 4:
If you bought a license during the REAPER 3 series, REAPER 4 will be a free upgrade, and you will continue to get free upgrades through version 4.99.
If you have never bought a REAPER license, a new REAPER 4 license will be $60/$225, and will include free upgrades through version 5.99. (See here (http://www.cockos.com/reaper/purchase.php) for an explanation of the difference between the two license prices.)
We also have a couple of new prices to announce, to make sure everyone feels like they are getting a fair deal, regardless of when they choose to purchase REAPER:
Effective immediately, new licenses for REAPER 3 will be $40/$150. The license will include free upgrades through version 4.99. The reason for this discount is to offer a fair price during the last part of the REAPER 3 cycle.
If you bought a license during the REAPER 2 series, you will be able to buy a REAPER 4 license for $50, after REAPER 4 is released. The terms will be identical to a new version 4 license, and include free upgrades through version 5.99. (The $50 price applies to commercial REAPER 2 license holders as well.) The reason for this discount is to say thank you.
In summary, you can:
Buy a new REAPER 3 license now for $40/150. Includes free upgrades through 4.99.
Upgrade a REAPER 3 license to REAPER 4 for free, after REAPER 4 is released. Includes free upgrades through 4.99.
Buy a new REAPER 4 license for $60/225, after REAPER 4 is released. Includes free upgrades through 5.99.
Upgrade a REAPER 2 license to REAPER 4 for $50, after REAPER 4 is released. Includes free upgrades through 5.99.
Thanks as always for supporting REAPER!

another month,more fixes and features.
The interesting thing is, if you were waiting for any of these, you don't have to wait for a major version update to use them.
You probably won't hear (from COCKOS) that "beta has been enjoying them since there were fixed 12 months ago but we couldn't risk a hotfix update that could break the software." Sound familiar?
Version 4 of REAPER is due out this year and you can be pretty sure, there will be a steady stream of updates before then and immediately after.
Maybe this is not a traditional approach, but I think fewer and fewer people are seeing it as unworkable.
Expect Steinberg to follow suit :D
(my attempt at humour)
p.s anyone who hasn't installed SWS extensions or REAmenus is missing out.

Well said. It's exactly this kind of spirit that made me swap over to Reaper. I feel I've broken free of my shackles to $B at last... and boy does it feel GOOD! Really GOOD.

I'm hoping at some point for a few additional "bells & whistles", but Reaper has a light footprint overall and that is one item I've liked about it. It will run on some older hardware that I don't mind "sending into the field" for portable duty.
Reaper has my two thumbs up. I am at version 4.10 rev 8072e4 here. (Sept 30, 2011).
Both 32 bit and 64 bit work excellently with no problems mixing and matching plugins (with the Reaper plugin bridging) for what I use. You can take a session started in 32 bit and open it in the 64 bit version or visa-versa without issues. At least I don't have any issues doing that.
Nuendo is still the "kitchen sink" DAW, if you understand what I'm saying. It's just that some of the house that comes with the kitchen sink is in need of fixin'. I might upgrade Nuendo someday.

Once you get into a DAW and get used to all it's peculiarities, along with the huge investment in time and expense required, there is a real reluctance to change to something else. The software DAW giants know this so by offering another "coat of paint" and a few more bells and whistles on each paid-for upgrade they help to maintain the belief we all have that "one day" it will become the DAW we always wanted it to become... this is how they manage to stay in business and we, as users, remain frustrated and irate. Locked into a cycle of constantly paying money to companies we hate builds resentment and anger... not the ideal qualities one wants to develop when attempting to create inspiring, meditative sonic pieces.
The relief of moving over to Reaper has truly liberated me from this endless dilemma of frustration that I have endured for many years.
The spirit of both the software and community is a real joy. It is a relief to know that in many, many ways, a better alternative exists and it's not expensive or that difficult to swap over.
It's easy. The relief, as far as I am concerned, is like walking free of a prison... the difference between night and day.
If anyone has any doubts, make that jump to freedom, you won't regret it. :icon_lol:
