A separate computer handling the task? I'd not run anything in the background on a daw...
I've been thinking about a small Linux system handling this, but so far never found the time to really look into it. I use my laptop for internet (with full antivirus), the studio network is independent from the internet and I only use the internet on my daw for registrations or such things. So I only visit sites that seem safe. For that I rely on the basic firewall in the dsl modem and don't have antivirus.

either keep antivirus all the way off and only download from perhaps known update sites for your software, etc...., or have something like an interchangable C drive like SonicaX offers on their DAW's so you can safely use the computer for personal use with antivirus.
You don't want antivirus running behind a pro audio setup ever.

Acronis........ can't say it enough...... Acronis........
Always have byte for byte backups of all system drives! Keep data on other drives.

The only time I see this reaction is from people who can't figure out how to multi-boot correctly.
Nate,
I have 4 boot partitions , XPSP3 , Vista 64 , Win 7 32, Win7 64, and GOD forbid, I haven't bothered to hide the boot partitions, and somehow manage to multi-boot correctly fine, without it ending up in a smoking mess, so whats your point ?
Would I be interested in maybe hiding the boot partitions for clients who are , hmmm, lets say , more prone to overwriting something accidentally due to being technically all thumbs, maybe, can I bother wading thru another derailed mess to find out.. Nope.

Gentlemen, in an effort to protect you from yourselves, 3/4's of this thread has been exorcised... :icon_twisted:
speaking of firewalls...
If one goes down, they all go down. Also, you have to install OS's in a certain order.
I can wipe one partition and re-install without affecting others.
The list goes on and on.
Doing anything the Microsoft way isn't good, IMHO.
Could you put up any instructions to set up multi-boot with hidden partitions in the tipsntricks nate?

Nate,
Cool, now thats more like it ..
Sam just beat me to it, I was about to ask you to do a tutorial so that those of us that use multi boots , for what ever reason, can actually benefit from the hidden partition alternative to MS's standard boot manager..
Thanks

I have created a thread here where you can go on with boot and partition recommendations :icon_cool:

Now back to my topic.. Any suggestions on reasonably safe and lightweight AV/FW software?
Ola
have installed comodo internet security. Anti virus is beta, but everything seems to work so far. Its free, small footprint, easy to configure or tons of options if u know what u are doing.
Would probably install this puppy on all my non DAW machines.
NOD32 it people choice. But I prefere free / donation software...
hope this helps
