Hi there, I was mastering some audio recently and the projects have been using
2 plug ins with oversampling plugins and it took my system to 80pct (2 x 2.8gHz Xeons, not dual core). I will be waiting 6 months before the build but the time is nigh.
I have a copy of XP Pro sitting here awaiting deployment !
As far as cpu's and chipsets what is the current stable and fast config?
Many thanks.
(for the rest of the system I propose, ASUS mainboard, TAGAN PSU, 4GB Ram,
2x500GB Samsung Spinpoints, Zalman coolers, Crucial Ram, Server tower, if any of these components are old hat now do let me know ; )

HI,
Dual Xeon Nehalem (newest) 55xx series
Core i7 (single nehalem) 920,940,965 these beat older Xeons.
FYI cant use XP on the Xeons need Vista 64.

Thanks there thats helpful.
Though that precludes the Xeons as Vista in my experience has been one slow bloated turd of a OS.

You don't know what you're talking about. Bloated, yes. Slow? Only if you're on a POS. Vista 64 is quite fast on hardware that supports it. Not good for a DAW, but good for everything else.

Also, how do Core 2 Quad CPU's compare to i7 clock equivalents?
Core 2 quad and I7 both good to go with XP Pro 32bit?
And I wonder how much more DSP will I get compared with my dual Xeons
(single core)
Sorry for so many Q's.
Many thanks

once upon a time yes
Vista 64 and Cubendo in 32 bit on one of those new Xeons is sick....

Hey Scott,
Can you please get one of the boys to run up some DAWbench DSP- RXC numbers for me for the data base..
It'll be a while before I dabble with the Dual Sockets..
Thanks Mate..

it took getting an order for a video system to finally get some numbers.

Hello, I'm new here.
My apologies if this is a very basic question, but why does XP not work with these new Xeons?

Hey Kristophe,
We are referring specifically to XP32 , its not that it doesn't work , its simply that the Nehalem memory architecture is based on a Tri Channel array , and each socket has independent memory arrays, so even at the bare minimum that is at least 3 GB per Socket , totalling 6GB all up. Its pointless having 6GB on a 32 Bit system, and could in fact be detrimental.
XPx64 would probably work very well on these systems.
