View Full Version : Cool Versus Quiet?

There seems to be a lot of knowledgable people on this forum building daws - so can I ask you all a question. I intend to build a core 17 920 system for use with Cubase running lots of VSTS mostly orchestral but synths etc too. Obviously Ram is an issue, so I am waiting for Win 7 and the price of 4 gigs to come down a little. I will run my first overclocked machine if I can, but my studio has no hope of isolating the DAW so I need quiet. All in all I am hoping to get all my VSTS running on one machine.

I dont really know whether to go with the stock fan or purchase a custom fan. Its hard to tell - without using ears. Which is the best way to go? I dont want to invest in a good fan to find it is efficient but so noisy it gets in the way of recordings.

Could anyone advise please?

even the stock intel fan would work we use after market for better cooling

waiting for the price of ram to come dowmn????
if 4gigs is a concern the whole system should be... ram is dirt cheap
and you will want at minimum 6 gig.

with i7 its 3, 6, 12 or 24gig....
NOT 4 or 8...

Thanks JC for the input - I did mean 4 gigs per strip though (around £160 each) - should have been clearer.

'We use after market' is that a fan name? Dont undertstand.

I was really happy with my Thermaltake Big Typhoon (http://www.overclockercafe.com/Reviews/cooling/Tt_Big_Typhoon/index.html) which was a silent as fans get without being switched off.

I don't use it now since I got a PaQ case, cause it has it's own cooler fan and exhaust duct.

I'm running an i7/GigaEX58UD5 system in an Antec Take4 rachmount case. I chose a Noctua NHU9B cooler. The system is virtually silent. If you are using a larger case, the Nocuta NHU12 cooler is a bit larger and cools a touch better, but it won't fit in a 4RU size case. I have a small 1 room studio and I don't pick up any case/fan noise at all.
