Hey All,

Thought I'd share a few little freeware apps that could be useful.

Q-Dir 3.61 - is a multipane explorer replacement , up to 4 panes, that makes managing files between HD's a breeze.

I have tried many of these multipane apps over the years, freeware , shareware and commercial, and this little app has proven to be the best for me. The other good thing is that is current and constantly updated unlike many of the others out there.

MeinPlatz 1.63 - is a Utility that scans and lists directory / folder sizes within the hard drive, great for sorting where all of that HD space is disappearing to.

Check them out Here (http://www.softwareok.com/?Freeware)

I worked with a demo version of Directory Opus until the trial ran out, but it was way too expensive to even consider purchasing. Sinc then I did what you did: tried out many of the free ones. Up to this day I've been using FreeCommander, which is also a multipane explorer replacement. And a neat piece of software, too!

I will take a look at Q-dir, thanks!

Hey Pete,

I tried Free Commander as well , but it had some quirks that ruled it out for me, one being that to rename a file was driving my crazy getting it to reliable select and highlight the name to change it, and I am not a fan of hitting a function key to work around the problem.

Q-Dir worked as expected and is easier to navigate around IMO.

Let me know what you think..

Q-Dir seems to be really nice. Thanks for the heads up.

I cannot get it to do password protected ftp though, which is unfortunate.

Hey John,

Hmm, don't use it for FTP.., just as a basic file manager.

The developer is quite open to feedback and qualms tho, drop him a line.

I found a little quirk where if you highlight a file to rename for example , change the name and hit enter, it actually steps back one menu instead of just entering the edited name, clicking off the file fixes that tho, , also even selecting the file(s) and hitting enter which would for example launch the required application , also does the same thing..

I am going to suggest he changes the behaviour to be identical to the standard Explorer..

BTW: I also got rid of all of the colors...LOL

Quick edit,

Now the highlight, enter is behaving as expected...., :eusa_think:

Maybe I am loosing it... LOL

The author replied to my query about the ftp functionality and with a method I seldom use because it should only be used on a secure PC if at all, but here it is for those that may need it:

ftp://username:password@site_name

I don't normally use this because of security reasons, but once the site is displayed, the ftp address is no longer directly visible which I think is good. Closing Q-Dir and reopening will again show the site, but not the site name.

Be aware that this information is stored in a history of visited sites, including the passwords.

Can we say security one more time?

Hey John,

Thanks for the heads up.., its great to see the developer interacting with the end users.

I tend to stick with dedicated FTP clients for most FTP work, I personally use FlashFXP , but I'll keep this workaround in mind..

The app has also been updated in the last couple of days to version 3.63 , which has ironed out the oddity with the highlight/enter from what I can see..
