What Facebook really does. (http://www.videosift.com/video/What-you-need-to-know-about-Facebook)

I have also been told that once you join you can't remove yourself.

Little scary.

All the data mining. I have yet to join, and don't know if I will.

I have a Facebook account,. It's the only way that my nieces communicate. I'm sure that they have entered loads of information about themselves. I have entered none about myself. If the site can trawl the Web for me, then so can anyone else, so it doesn't worry me overmuch.

I don't know.

I have always worried about giving out too much information.

Even just your name could lead to a whole world of things couldn't it?
Since ID theft is so rampant, wouldn't something like facebook open that up?

Just curious. You can't even view face book with out being a member, so I don't really know.

I am a bit apprehensive.

While I'd like to find old friends, it worries me using my full name.

i was involved in a collab project where the other participants decided to use facebook as the default project HQ (even though everyone already had myspace accts.)

i joined.

i hate it.

it took me a long time to get used to myspace, and i really don't feel like figuring out the whole facebook dynamic--i think it's "kid's stuff" at best.

i haven't watched the vid...i will later tonight.

I use it... I like it... I don't use all of it's bells and whistles... and i didn't use my "real" name... I used Andrew Composerguy.

Don' put your birth-date year (for credit card a security issues in case people are data mining)... just month and date... or non at all.

It keeps me in touch with people I haven't seen or heard of in years.

Cheers,

T

Just to look at someone else's photo album, I signed up using a fake name and a throwaway Yahoo e-mail account (or some such). I wouldn't want to be on there as my real self. I deactivated the account as soon as I had looked at the photos. The facebook page said I could reactivate the account any time by just logging in again with that username & password.

I am on Facebook mainly to keep in contact with out of state friends, but have always been leery of public personal information sites, so my info there is minimal. Makes me wonder what's really at risk here even with a small amount of info provided. I don't use the extra features or applets as they seem like nothing more than covert 3rd party datamining or advertising gimics, and Facebook states that these applets could be anything as they don't control, police or create them - seems like a haven for potential hacking and theft.

I've thought of deleting my account. Using kdm instead of my real name was always about simply keeping my name out of Google searches for some small measure of security, what little security there is on the net anymore.....

I've thought of deleting my account. ....

As I said, you can only deactivate your facebook account. It'll wait there forever for you to reactivate it by simply logging in again with your name & password. Kinda creepy eh?
