The computer didn't burn, the battery did. Laptop battery failures have ben in the press often over the last few years of course, any high current battery with an internal low resistance fault will do the same thing. Question is, who manufactured the battery cells, was the battery dropped or damaged at any time, was the charger faulty or exposed to a power surge at some point?

"Powerbook Explodes" is a nice headline for the press to sell papers, unfortunately the accurate description "Laptop battery explodes" doesn't get the same emotional response for those who want to sell tabloids.

The Sony built batteries in Fujitsu laptops were doing the same thing a couple of years back, and Dell, Lenovo, Apple and most other major laptop manufacturers also had to recall them. A Samsung's battery set a man's bed alight.

So I would guess that it is Apple's fault that the Sony battery failed...

I have a Powerbook with those batteries, on my last tour I carried it onto over 90 international and domestic flights, and if I add all of the other laptops on those flights that used Sony batteries I feel lucky that I didn't get to see a magnesium fire in an overhead locker.

Hey Steve,

Its so easy to get you Macnoids fired up.. :D

I distinctly remember my iFruit loving friends having a field day when the initial reports of exploding batteries were focusing on Dell computers, with the typical "should have bought a Mac" bullshite flowing thick and fast, no mention of its the battery not the computer from the Macnoids from memory.

I also remember how quickly the tide turned when the issue started to appear on the holier than thou Mac notebooks..

Its a 2 way street.

BTW: the Inquirer is not known for its love of the iFruit, so of course they will take any opportunity to have a dig and getting the oh so easy Mac Fanbois frothing..

P.S : The video I posted was a PC laptop going up in flames..

no one forced them to choose a LiOn battery that is prone to failure....my MBP battery swelled up to the point that I threw it out into the paddock the other day thinking it would explode.....I had taken good care of it, and it failed...

I have seen LiPo batteries (slightly different chemistry to the laptop batterys) explode in spectacular fashion in RC helicopters before...nasty shit!!!

Every laptop maker uses Lithium ion, it has the most energy density, and if they use batteries that don't have the capacity of their competitors then they will be out of the market. No one want's a laptop that uses NiCd or NimH batteries.
