More info on PowerPro, a few posts down.

So I get tis right, Once you have your VST connections set up the way you work, you copy the file for a backup. If you experience a case where the routings are lost, the program PowerPro overwrites Cubase's FX xml file with the copied one?

Oh I missed this:

Besides starting Cubase, make that button replace the original XML file with the saved one.

I follow you now. It's kind of like a batch process opening cubase procedure that launches the program and simultaneously replaces the XML file on eaxh startup with the archived one that has all the proper routings.

I'm sure you tried this, but what the heck..

Have you tried just changing permissions on the external effx xml to read-only so Cubase can's screw it up?

BTW, thanks for posting this. Not only is it very helpful to correct the issue, but you can launch a suite of programs it seems. I hope you can put in launch delays though. Some of my programs have to load before others.

Very cool:icon_yes:

yep, tried changing permissions.
Cubase reset it to normal, again.

And yes, PowerPro is extremly deep.
You can add delays at any point in a task chain.

Also very handy for DAW work :
Window roll up, triggered by a right click anywhere on the caption.
( Or whatever other action you may prefer )

Thanks dada.

Hi again,
wouldn't it be good, if the Routing of External FX won't get lost ?
( We had that in SX3 )

Workaround :
Setup your External FX, as needed.
Quit Cubase
Copy the External FX XML File to a save place.
Get yourself a 'teaker app' like PowerPro.
In PowerPro, create a Cubase startbutton.
Besides starting Cubase, make that button replace the original XML file with the saved one.

Now, everytime You use that button to start V.5, it will also replace the Extenal FX XML file,
with the one that holds the correct settings !
Cool

bye, Jan

I went ahead and just put it in here.

*promote to Workarounds section (I know it doesn't exist yet.) :)

Thanks Lex - noted and we'll put this one on the list when we have a list. :-)

Would building a macro on a Mac do the same thing? Nice to know I am not the only one who loses external FX setting now and then....

Hmmm, I haven't seen this ExtFX problem before and I use them all the time. That would be a pain in the ass.

I know that if I forget to turn on my interface and Nuendo boots and defaults to built-in audio it will do it, but then switching ASIO drivers would seem an obvious cause of screwed up I/O routing, but I have had it happen occasionally when the system is all set up correctly too.

Well, Cubendo3 keeps the External FX Settings, even when switching ASIO drivers.
The other I/O settings can be stored/recalled, so that is not a big issue ...

... but I have had it happen occasionally when the system is all set up correctly too.
Yep, AFAIK, there are two main reasons, why External FX Routings get lost.
- Changing ASIO drivers ( I do this constantly )
- Cubendo crashing can corrupt the xml setting files
( Cubendo can crash on exit, so it may not be noticed ... )

Hey Jan,

On another related, maybe not, How do you handle this:

I pipe stuff out to outboard compressors, EQs and pres as external effects.
I add these and when doing so it removes the routing from the input panel.
Restoring the input panel removes the routing from the external effect (to not connected) In SX3, you had to remove the input routings before you could have access to the i/o in other panes.

It's kind of a pain since I always have to restore one or the other, most times long hand so to speak in the ext effx panel since I can recall the saved input settings.

I don't have the program you posted yet, but do you know if I can replace the ext effx xml file while cubase is open and the effx routings will be restored? Do you just close and reopen the program using the program to restore the routings?

I never really suffered from just losing the routings it's from changing ext effx routings when the input was being used as an input. I always handled it as, "well, that's just the way it is" and just manually re-did the ext effect routings since I only pipe out 4 stereo sets to devices.

Well, I answered one of my own questions by replacing the ext effx xml while cubase was open. It didn't restore the routings in the ext effect panel.

Still curious of your thoughts on this.

Well, I use two soundcards ( HDSP 9652 and ProFire 2626 ) and switch between their ASIO drivers.
The problem is similar, though.
One of my setups jsut needs normal I/Os, while the other needs ext fx.
Even in SX3, when switching ASIO drivers, I always had to restart SX, to restore my ext fx routing,
as the ext fx xml is only read at startup ( as You already know ).
So this is still the same in V5, apart from being forced, to replace the xml file on startup.

It would be great, if we could just change the ext fx routing 'on the fly' and store/reload settings.

ATM., getting back your I/Os is quite easy, while getting back your ext fx will need a reboot and xml replacement.

Sadly just another MINORITY Issue ( a severe issue, that only affects a minority. Not to mix up with 'minor' ) !
