View Full Version : When you can't get good EDL's from editors....
what do you do?
I have an odd one.
I usually make the editor's strip out anything not pertaining to the audio in the section to be conformed.
Until now, I have been pretty lucky.
I finally get a working EDL, drop it into Virtual Katy and watch it work.
This time, I have 3 EDL's for 1 conform. The editor followed my "please remove crap" instructions.
I ran it through VK (all 3) and it is all fucked up. After the 1st act break, everything is out of sync.
Yes, there are 3 different EDL's. What happened is they did a cut, then did another cut and then did a final cut.
In the first cut, they asked that there be more removed.
In the second, they asked for some trims and extension.
For the 3rd, it was conformed for act breaks with black and some more trims.
This version came from a longer international version, being cut down for domestic, NBC.
So I am figuring, maybe I'll run the 1st EDL and just do the rest by eye.
I have an OMF, but it is just a 2 track.
Suggestions?

Does the edl drift out of sync? Or are there hard cuts that are out?
Flm/vid speed possibility?
Flm/vid speed possibility?
No.
No drift. Edits don't line up.

Hey LEX,
Following on from our phone conversation last week ..
Is this a symptom of the FCP syndrome sweeping the Video/Post world ?
YES. This is part of that.
We have editors and assistant editors who don't know what they are doing.
I have just been through using 2 versions of the EDL to make 1 conform.
Things are out of sync, complete scenes don't match.
So, I am headed off to the studio to show them.
I'll be able to make it work with some work, but I am going to have to bill HIGH for the extra work it is going to take me.

YES. This is part of that.
We have editors and assistant editors who don't know what they are doing.
Its amazing how many applauded as FCP swept over the industry and poked AVID in the eye, and now we have the aftermath that no-one is really talking about openly enough..
I have heard a few horror stories locally where a major broadcaster is regretting the day they moved from AVID to FCP, as the money saved has only resulted in more downtime navigating the delivery issues , missed deadlines, and even loss of a data server when the genius technicians from iFruit lost a complete RAID array .. :eusa_whistle:
And we are not talking a small roll out either , it was a major change, the whisper is they are heading back to AVID with their tails between their legs.

You know, it already says so in the bible, stay the fuck away from the Apple. However, being an Atheist and all, my credo for the last couple of years has been - "Love the MAC - Hate the Pro-Apps".

Don't get me started. This happens to me all the time. I'm so sick of it. There is always a 1st assistant who, most of the time, is a nice pretty young girl. She wears a short skirt and gives the fat beer belly editor a little hard on when she bends down to repatch leads etc. She is usually slim. The most important of her nice girly traits is nearly always this....
She doesn't have a bloody clue what she is doing.
It doesn't matter what the budget or what the film title is, there is ALWAYS a girl like this working in the cutting room.
Me, "Can I get burnt in timecode on those playouts please?"
Girl (small brain whirring.....make up, nails, is my skirt short enough today?, magazines, am I looking fat today?, I don't know anything about the equipment I'm supposed to know about.............), "Errr...No. You can't"
I don't think this is so much an FCP problem as a total mong will be unable to output a change edl on avid too if they haven't got a clue what is going on. :piss2:
