View Full Version : Cubase 5 - Is it any good?

To answer my own subject.
YES it is. It is in fact very good.
Before I go any further I will stop and say, sadly yes, there are some bugs that you guys will know from earlier.
Those must be fixed in the first update.
But the good thing is. Several hundred old bugs have been fixed. C5 is faster, much more stable, have great new features.
Simple just feels good. Even though there is some old nasties.
Just wait and try it before everyone is beheaded.
I do not know any stories about Mr. Zimmer, but if he dropped C4.x in favour of C5 I fully understand that. That much of stability changes is there.

Yep, both solo and mute are removed.
You can still do solo with some sort of C# language combined with PLE editor.
Ade can tell you how to program it! :-)
Sadly for those hurt by the bug its still there...
Let's focus on something else. It won't get fixed until they have the code ready.

Why?
The Guru

Why?
Exactly! They said it was going to take time to fix in N4, but it should have been dealt with in C5 out of the gate. I mean not being able to solo a signal chain is a laughingstock, IMHO. It puts the app in the Romper Room class.:icon_rolleyes:

Please, let's keep this thread solo/mute free.

Dude, here's your thread title: "Cubase 5 - Is it any good?"
In my opinion faulty solo/mute behavior diminishes the value of the product. It lessens the degree to which I would call it "good". I'd say it's highly relevant.
Don't like it? We could change the name of the thread if you like..... Just say "when"....

I suppose that whether or not Cubase 5 is any good will depend on one's needs. From what I've seen so far, it is a waste of space for me.

We will not make a list what has been "fixed" because of some things are complete new, are rewritten or else. Cubase 5 is (just to make it simpel) a new program. I can say that a big amount of the list in the "Infobase" is fixed with Cubase 5.

Well, if they did not fix that major flaw before releasing Cubase 5, it's the SOS (same old Steinberg, in this case).
I've been pissing into the wind with them for eleven years now, trying every approach I know to get them to do the right thing.
I'm just plain tired of it.
The world has bigger things to deal with now, but I hope in the not-too-distant future, governments of the world begin holding these software developers' feet to the fire.
On topic: if most of the major V4 bugs are not fixed in Version 5 upon its release, no, it's not much good--even if it clips your toenails and makes coffee for you.

Bill

Hey Pal,
With all due respect, you have just walked into that one.. :icon_eek3:
There are some really cool things in C5, no doubt about it, but if the laundry list of major bugs haven't been addressed first, then its all window dressing again, well at least for those affected.
It also proved the claim that C5 is a whole new engine made by one of the Steini reps, is B.S.
They need to dot the i's on this one Mate, if they don't , all the window dressing in the world is not going to save them in Pro circles. Cubase will still remain a "C" word...

What about the broken Hard Quantize ( opposed to Iterative Q. )??
Is it still affected by 'NonQuantize' ?
This was completely broken for many years and half fixed in the last V.4, I tested.
Was working as expected in Cubase5VST.
Thanks, Jan

Steinberg is unbelieveably stupid...
All this smoke and mirrors hype to try taking attention off the fact they haven't fixed the singlemost important and embarrassing bug in recent history.
So... Nuendo 4 and Cubase 5 will receive the solo/mute fix... sometime in the summer of 2009.
Now, after this NAMM show afterglow, Steinberg will face 6 months of NEW criticism and scrutiny on the solo/mute shortcomings because they released C5 before fixing it.
They are SO ABSOLUTELY STUPID!
They have no shame, and they deserve all the critical press they get.
C5 update for $199...
N4 to N5 update for ??? + another $100 for the upgrade NEK??? (speculating)
Or, upgrading from N3 to N5 for ??? + another $249 for the N5 NEK??? (they need to penalize all of us who never bought N4)
When N2 to N3 was $299 for everything...
Meanwhile, the FULL C5 Academic is only $299... (how many of you have kids in school?)
With pricing like this, they are making Cubase much more attractive than Nuendo (after it's fixed)... if they're not careful, they'll get what they postured for with N4... POST only users.
If all the musicians using Nuendo were to abandon it, their sales revenue from Nuendo will be decimated, because MOST of it's users are primarily audio only.
No revenue = no development... + unfixed bugs = bye bye.

Now, all of you Cubase SX3 owners... I want a show of hands for those of you who are happy to be paying an extra $199 to get the broken C4 functions fixed (that you already paid $199 for) by upgrading to C5... and waiting 6 months.
That's basically $400 in upgrades and years of pain & suffering to get where a NEW C5 buyer will be for $499... in 6 months.
That's Steinberg's idea of loyal owner appreciation... :icon_rolleyes:

Sorry, engine was the wrong word.., I should have said application.
Have a look at CB's quote from earlier on claiming the application is new, and thats why they will not release a fixed bug list from the previous Seq4..
I can't believe solo/mute isn't fixed. To be honest I kind of expected it but I thought I'd give the benefit of the doubt. As for beat masher, seems like a similar situation to media bay. Why introduce more features if the other ones don't work....

Agreed, to an extent. I have been able to use C4 reliably for 6 months or so now, so I guess I got "some" payback for my investment.
I actually bought C4 right when it was announced, but didn't install it until about 6 months ago due to all of the issues. I could not take a chance and kept chugging away with SX3.11. That really ticked me off! I paid the money, but did not feel comfortable using it.
I actually tried to return it with 30 days of buying it, but they would not take it back, even though it was unopened and I have been a Steinberg customer since before Methuselah. They said "When you ordered it online, you accepted the non-return policy." I told them, "BS, I ordered this over the phone you idiot, and the policy was never discussed." They basically told me tough shit, you are stuck with it.
So there it sat on my shelf, still shrink-wrapped, until I finally installed it 6 months ago.
The only reason I even installed it to begin with is that I had a mixing project in the studio from a session that was recorded at another studio that was using C4. My plan was to install C4, and then export all the files as WAVs using MEAP, and then importing back into SX3.11 for mixing. Instead, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised at how stable it was (4.2 something??? I honestly don't remember exactly).
Steinberg lost my trust when they abandoned SX3 without the promised upgrade, dropped DX, released the worst version in their history (C4), dropped hardware support, and then left me holding the bag.
At the time, I swore I would never give Steiny any more of my money, and I went out and bought Samplitude Pro 9. That was a HUGE mistake, and I came back to SX3.11 fairly quickly. (Long story on Samp... not worth repeating).
I feel like Steinberg has me trapped with no where to go.
I would love to jump ship to PT, but the LE version is such a joke, and HD is so expensive for what you get. I keep hoping that they are going to lift some of the LE restrictions, but I am beginning to realize that it will never happen at this point.
So I either: 1) stick with C4, 2) cough up the money for C5 (which I swore I would never do), or 3) drop big bucks on PT HD.
None of those choices sound great.
C4 is OK as it is, but I really need something like Elastic Audio for multi-track drum editing, and don't get me started on the mute/solo bug!
Yep, Double, pretty much in the same boat ...
( Except I never payed for V.4 and love Samplitude for Mastering ).
ATM. all choices seem to suffer from certain drawbacks.
18 years back, that was easier, somehow ...

We'll I have been contemplating this.
While I would love to have an "all in one" app, it hasn't looked promising since V4.
Have have considered moving to another platform all together. Unfortunately, like you I feel stuck as Logic would be the only other choice in terms of midi, but it is missing alot of features.
We know that solo/mute and video will not be fixed in the initial C5 release but will be on the next maintenance release. So there is a little waiting for that.
Without being able to dig deep into C5 yet and know what shortcoming to expect, we won't know until we are holding it or get that info from other users who have it.
I considered this, rather than going to another platform.
For Post, I'll just continue to use ProTools.
For midi, I'll use C5 on my host just for midi. No audio.
It will just trigger my slaves, and I'll build another system, a shuttle, for recording the audio using Nuendo 3 and VST system link.
Then either mix in Reaper or Nuendo3 on the host.
Granted, since V4 has just been sitting doing nothing, there could be the actual possibility that by 5.1, the whole thing could be used again, but we'll just have to wait and see.
It would still be cheaper than PTHD. I know Hans just uses Nuendo to trigger samplers, then records into PTHD.
No audio mixing or recording in Nuendo.
