Hi Everyone,

I am pleased to announce that LA Scoring Strings, a new paradigm in string libraries, will be exhibited at the Art Vista booth (booth # 6427) at the NAMM show from January 15th -18th.

I’ll be demonstrating the library myself and look forward to seeing many of you there.

Below is a description of the library... it will be released in Kontakt format (unlocked editing, but locked samples and scripts). This library is in its final stages of development and demos will be posted soon after the NAMM show. Also, the price has yet to be determined... that too will be determined soon after the NAMM show.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LA Scoring Strings (LASS) brings a whole new level of expressiveness, realism and real-time playability to sampled strings.

At the heart of its revolutionary sound are Real Legato performance sample patches and a unique "layered ensemble" approach. These ensembles were all recorded individually in a large film scoring studio. Because they're made up of different players (avoiding the dreaded "same player" sound), the ensembles combine seamlessly to produce entirely cohesive small, medium, or large sections with the right divisi ratios.

LASS also features solo instruments performed by the section leaders. Rather than sounding like "guest soloists," these instruments sound like the first chair players they actually are, blending perfectly with the sections they come from.

The players are recorded in position on the scoring stage and mixed in the traditional orchestral seating perspective, making it simple to get a magnificent string mix out of the box. Meanwhile we took the utmost care to ensure that the instruments can be panned anywhere with virtually no phasing problems should you need to do that.

And to make it easy to get just the right sound, all LASS patches and programming are consistent from the first chair to the full mix. If a part sounds right using the first chair patch, the same sequence will sound right with the full ensemble—no MIDI reprogramming should be required.

The result is unprecedented control over dynamics, performance, and section size.

Featured LASS Scripts
Note that these are just 3 of many scripts.

LASS Real Legato — REAL legato performance samples — meticulously programmed and scripted for non repetitive legato transitions and real-time control of legato articulations.
A.R.T. (Auto Rhythm Tool) — an advanced (yet simple to use) rhythm and accents script with humanization features.
Trill Script — the script intelligently triggers trills diatonically in any key with just 1 Key Switch.

List of articulations:
There will be over 40+ legato patches (different performances) that in-and-of-themselves are like premium virtual instruments. Note that “L” means Legato, “P” means Portamento and “G” means Glissando. All dynamic layers are controllable in real-time via mod wheel (CC1).

Thanks... it's not been the most difficult thing I've ever done, but surely the most massive :icon_eek3:

I pretty much own most the big libraries, but for years I've been frustrated with the "holes" in my own template. So I figured I'd address those myself.

Animus and KDM... thanks guys... I'll be able to post some stuff after NAMM.. prolly in a couple weeks.

And by then I should have some better info about release dates too.

Hey T,

Looks impressive , all the best with the endeavour.. :-)

Are you directly involved with the creation of the library, or are you just demoing ?

It's my baby.

I planned it, scored it, hired a great scoring engineer, recorded it, edited and programmed it.:freak3:

Basically produced the whole thing.. sort of a labor of love.

So only in Kontakt for now.. ?

Any plans for a VSTi version using Kontakt Player, punters are getting lazier and lazier these days...LOL

Hi Martini.

for trade secret reasons (I'm sure you understand), I cannot say where it was recorded or who played on it, but I can say the players were all world class.

Few things.

First and foremost, best of luck with this project. If you break even financially, you win.

Secondly, it sounds from the tone of your initial post, that we will have multiple mic positions? You needn't go into too many details, but are there? Dos? Trois? :icon_lol:

Third:

I pretty much own most the big libraries, but for years I've been frustrated with the "holes" in my own template. So I figured I'd address those myself.

Glad to hear this. One needn't go out and just record a lib; nowadays a lib needs to, as you say, 'fill the holes'. And who better to fill those holes than someone who knows those holes....:icon_lol:

Lastly, this (http://vi-control.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10973) you?

If it is, that post makes alot of sense. If not, I feel bad for that dude. :icon_lol:

Hi Riff,:)

There are no multiple mic positions... there were in the recordings to give me options at mix-down (over 13 mics actually). But because of all the ensembles and the vast amount of samples, multiple mic choices would have been too much.

Also, I mixed these with just enough 1srt reflection and reverb tail to give you a nice presence without committing you to a sound. So, this library will be designed to be used with your choice or verb/s.

No.. Alex W is not me. He's a good guy though. I don't wish any unfortunate things on anyone. Hopefully he didn't commit to his project just yet.

Cheers,

T

Wow, I have been out of the orchestral sample market for too long. Didn't even realize Symphobia was released. That sounds pretty badass. SOunds like they didn't get the legato right though which is a shame. Great sounding though. Pricey as hell perhaps.

If you can top that Thonex I would be game though yours will have a different focus I am sure. :icon_lol:

Symphobia is a different animal from what it sounds like Thonex' library is for. Symphobia is geared more towards effects and pairings for presence that you don't get in other libs (octave strings, low brass, low brass with piano hits, etc) and includes brass, winds, strings, and some odd effects as well, but not strings in divided sections as Thonex has done.

There is a short review here (http://www.audiomidi.com/aboutus/reviews/terry_symphobia.cfm). Nothing revealing if you own it, but may be helpful if you are considering it.

Sounds like Thonex' lib would be a great complement to most any library, and unique in its' own way. Glad to hear the ambience is on the lighter side! I'm sure it will sound fantastic already, and given the focus, it's already on my short list. :-)

Thanks KDM,

LASS was born out of the frustration with the "holes" I had in my orchestral string template. Especally espressivo strings and tight spiccatos and staccatos.

Since I own most of the major libraries, I figured if I had these needs, other composers would probably have the same needs... so I'm hoping that my years of scoring experience, sampling and midi mock-ups will result in a library most composers will turn to.

And yeah... the ambiance is on the lighter side. I battled with this for a long time. And I decided, I'd rather err on the side of drier than wetter... you can always add wet!!!

Cheers,

T

Hey Animus,

It's going great. At NAMM now... 1 day down... 3 to go. I'm doing a couple "official" demos a day at specified times and there's a good turn out. Of course with all the noise at NAMM... it's hard for anyone to hear the fidelity of the recordings, but everyone seemed very impressed with the control and realism.

My site is up now... so you get to see the info in color :icon_lol:

I got to listen to Thonex's demo at NAMM, and this string library is AWESOME.

It is so good even the other developers were sitting at the demo and listening.

He really put alot of effort into for quality first, not for sales first.

He even mentioned that as he uses the library for scoring, he will always be tweaking the library and will post them as he tweaks them.

Hey Lex... Thanks for the kind word bro.

Dude... where did you run off too? I was waiting at my booth until 6:15.. neither you or Chris Heinz showed up.. although noting was set in stone, I though maybe we'd get a bite to eat.

Anyway, it's entirely possible I'm at fault because it's been a long 3 days (one more to go) but I wanted to at least say "bye" and thank you for coming out.

Even better.... I got a pic of me.. holding up a dry erase board saying: "Hide Unused Tracks :-) " ... right in front of their booth :-))))))

There seems to be confusion though. Several people keep telling me it's in there... but they are referring to Hiding Mixer tracks... not Project window tracks.

But for you... I think I have some standard Stinberg booth pics... I have to DL them into my Mac.
