In Cubase (5). How do I tempo-map a free-time song?

Create a midi track and tap the tempo creating midi notes.
Merge tempo from tapping and select the meter in which you tapped..

I believe you'll do you best with Cubase 6 on that. In version 5, you'd have to accomplish it manually and depending on how 'rubato' your piece is, it could take a long time to get done.
I've seen it done at the ClubCubase meeting on version 6 using a new create tempo map feature and it works very well with only a little quick cleanup possibly needed. I know a guy here in Nashville that now often records the basics without a click, and then uses this create tempo map feature so that additional midi parts can be added more easily.
