Hi guys,
No horror stories here... but I don't want to wait until it's too late. I have two 10,000 rpm Raptor Drives in a Raid 0 config that give me 140 total gigs.
It works great!!! I don't ever remember having a problem with it. It was installed by Vision DAW about 4-5 years ago when I got my Dual Opti DAW.
Anyway, I think I'm playing playing with fire having been so lucky for so long. Can anyone recommend a high quality Raid 0 pair of HDs and explain what I need to do to format them as a Raid 0? Or at least point me in the right direction with a good link?
Thanks for any help,
T

Hey T,
What kind of data thru put are you requiring ?
You may find that a single large capacity HD with a 32 MB cache may be enough, saving you the logistical overhead of running a RAID array.
The new WD Black Series HD's are great , whether you run with a single HD or go with the RAID again. I personally haven't found the need for Raptors.
Re configuring the RAID, the methodology differs for respective controllers, so the manual would be worth a look see.

It's my main audio HD where I also have a lot of my DAW sample libraries... so whatever get's me the most polyphony and track count is what I want. Not sure sustained throughput is top priority.... maybe more rapid find/seek playback for streaming samples?
I do use my HD like a mother f#@ker.... so I want them to be really robust.... but lke you say... maybe the new 32 meg cache large drives perform equally to the old raided 10k rpm Raptors??? but I doubt it... no?
Thanks for any help.
Cheers,

Hey T,
I am not sure whether you would get the same outright performance, but that may not be an issue unless you are running the current RAID array close to the limits.
Daryl might be worth asking at the thru put he is currently achieving with his rig, I am pretty sure he is using the HD's in a standard config.

I'm always pushing everything to the limit.... I pretty much always max out my ram and eventually max out my voices.... so... whatever I do.. I want to make sure I'm not going backwards performance-wise.
Daryl?

I'm not really sure what to tell you. I can overload the ASIO Performance easily at 128, but if I whack the buffer up to 256 I have no problem. However, there are so many other issues here that I wouldn't know exactly what the 128 problems are caused by. I can say this; I don't think that I have any polyphony problems, and I am running the whole shebang on one PC (17GB template).
Ask me a specific question, and I might have time this weekend to have a go for you.

Daryl,
Are your HD raided?
If not... what did you use? Actually... either way... what did you use?... if you don't mind me asking.:)

Nah, RAID is a waste of time for audio and sample drives. Mine are just common or garden SATA.
