Hey, I like Wavelab as much as the next guy, but I've been using Cool Edit Pro for waveform editing and mastering since version 1.1 back in 1998...

Anyway, the latest Audition 3 does some very amazing stuff in addition to what you'd expect.
The new spectral view restoration/effects capabilities are mind boggling.
Audition 3 has Photoshop-style paintbrushes for capturing, "spot removal" and "healing".
Audition 3 is the best 'bang-for-the-buck" editor IMO.... $349

Very much worth checking out the free demo at Adobe.
Watch the demo clips first and see what I mean:

Yes I've always loved the noise reduction and batch processing in Audition (What was Cool Edit). Great program and mind bogglingly cheap for what it does.

The demo looked quite good and a nice intuitive interface.
Appears to me as being a merge of Acid Pro and Vegas Pro
but with rather less content.
With only 32bit platform support to offer it's not going to
find a place here but, for more compact infrastructures
and budgets it could be a great alternative.

The Surround Encoder does not encode to Dolby Digital.
The restoration tools are worth the cost alone though.
Big plus for me is that you can create scripts to automate certain processes - such as decoding SQ & QS back to 4.0 discrete. Very cool

There is nothing that this can't do when it comes to restoration thats for sure.

As far as multitrack recording its excellent IMO - editing brilliant.

If you want midi - use Cubase
