RUNNING WIN 7 i7, 16 GB RAM, on an ADK custom Computer buiult for Orchestral work. I've 5 TB LIBRARY HARD DRIVES, KON 4, VIENNA, PLAY, UVI, MOTU, etc.
I'm new to Cubase from Sonar. I'm currently bringing orchestral projects over from Sonar and working on putting up my templates to fit these projects.
In building a template today for my first full Orchestral transfer from Sonar I've been using only "Single Instrument Tracks" and Folders & Sub Folders.
I've only loaded the Virtual Instruments, no processing yet.
What I'm finding is that while the COMPLETED project in Sonar runs at 7.31 GB and 28%. the same instruments with ONLY 60 to 70 % now loaded is running in Cubase 5.5 at over 12 G.B. and a 60 - 70 % CPU usage hit!
I'm about to spend $500.00 for another 2 4GB Ram sticks, but before I do---
Is this a result of using Single Instruments Tracks?
----- or is Cubase that less efficient that I've got to plan on 30 to 40% less actual running efficiency?
Any feed back(s)

I really wish Cubendo's instrument/track presets were multitimbral with multiple outputs. If you are adding whole samplers such as Kontakt or VSL VI per single instrument I imagine that would suck resources up fast. Not sure how Sonor handles it.

As Animus noted, instrument tracks are for single-channel instruments - you are better off putting VSTis in the rack and routing midi tracks to them. If you are loading keyswitch instruments in Kontakt/VSL, and accessing via the instrument track, it shouldn't be that much different from loading a 16-channel instance of Kontakt in the rack and routing midi tracks (or single track) to it, but it would suck up a lot more ram and cpu if you are loading one instance of Kontakt for each instrument/articulation, etc.

Try the VST rack first and see if that is more effective. The only other way I can think of that *might* buy more efficiency would be to run a good bit of your template outside of Cubase via VEPro.

I'm guessing you are running Cubase 64 bit.

Hi again Stacy and to you also"KDM". Today I set up the same project template using only the Rack and that cut 5 GB out of the project, brought it in only about 3 mb over the mirrored version in Sonar. So everyday is a learning one.
One other question that I still can't find in the manual. Sonar has a function Sonar titles "Track Wipe". You can create a project, record and mix it, then to save its layout you can "Select All" or parts of it, and select"Track>Wipe" which wipes only the midi or audio clip info from the track, leaving it bare but saving all of the track assignments and settings (rather then Tracks>Delete" which deletes the entirety of the track(s)). Do you know if Cubase has a similar feature and if so what does Cubase call it?
Thanks again so much not only for the info but the speed with which you come back to us with it!
The best--
gc
PS--I am running Cubase 64 5.5.

Hit Control/Command A and then hit delete. :-) Then go into the pool and delete any audio. You might look at the Project Logical Editor as well cuz you can customize what's affected and do scripts etc.

Thanks again Stacy.Feel dumb asking some of this stuff because I know that its DAW basic stuff. The problems in terminology, language. Without knowing ,for example, that Cubase calls Measures "Silence", it took 260 odd pages in the Guerin Power Book to finally find the 2 sentences on "Inserting Silence".So next was ---"Deleting--- Silence?". I got that one fiqured out. Still, I appreciate your help. Don't know if enough people thank you guys for all you do---so---Thank you!!

LOL the insert silence was already there in the atari days. At that time there were few enough commands to know and try them all.
