Hi.

I just received the Sonalksis email offering 33% off all plugs and more.

Can anyone here who has used Sonalksis products offer any opinions - pros or cons? I've read some good reports over at gearslutz but would like to hear your opinions.

Thanks - Brett

No end users out there?

No end users out there?

Maybe that's the answer... I don't have any of their plugs either (and I'm pretty much a plugin junky), I only remember them from being discussed as 'finally the final solution' maybe 5 years ago or so? If noone around here seriously uses them, then it's maybe not so special anymore - or maybe never was. There are so many good (and a few great) plugins out there nowadys. Can't you try demo? This usually helps me a lot in making a decision.

I've always heard positive things about Sonalksis plugs.

14-day demos are available on all of them...

They are actually pretty good. I had used them on a mix 6 years ago. When putting in replacement compressors (UADs) I ended up going back to the Sonalksis.

Go figure.

I use their FreeG all the time. I would recommend getting that one for sure! At 33% off it's a steal.

Actually I have tried the Compressor and EQ and they're great (compared to the Cubase equivalents!). However I haven't tried many others so don't know how they compare to the competition, only to Cubase. I figured since I was considering spending the cash I'd like to hear if you guys think they're up to scratch, or if, for the money, I could do better.

Thanks for the replies.

From everything I have read over the years, they are respected plugins. I have only used their uber compressor and EQ. That was a while ago and I don't use any of them today. With that discount, that makes them real affordable and a cost effective alternative to the stock Cubase plugins which I think sound and work well. If I only had stock Cubase plugins, I would look into EQs because cubase's EQs aren't really surgical. Check Voxengo too for alternatives.

Thanks for that. What do you use instead?

Sonnox, Universal Audio, Sonitus are my most used. I have a ton of others, just early and coffee just kickin in and can't remember.

I have used Sonitus from the beginning when Ultrafunk developed them. Pretty clean and ultra ultra useful. Their gate is one of the best out there IMO. Sonnox has a more analogue sound and can be saturated by choice. Universal Audio are even thicker in color and have clean sounding plugins too.

These plugs are in every project I mix and cover the spectrum of needs really well.

The best gate by far now is definitely Softube's Valley People Dyna-myte. It's incredible really. And not a bad compressor as well.

You know, I tend to dislike those 'my eq is better than your eq 'etc type of threads that often appear in forums like gearslutz, but I do enjoy hearing what people are using and why. It's useful for those of us who haven't had the opportunity (or the finances) to try out multiple plugs for extended periods (14 day demos and the like are fine, but unless I work with a plugin for the duration of a project it's not really long enough to properly evaluate it). So thanks to those that have contributed. Keep it up.

Sorry. That's the one I meant. Sonitus or Ultrafunk. Very transparent compressor.
