View Full Version : Vocal Rider vs Wave Rider....
Both are automatic leveling plugins.
Here is what I have discovered.
1) Wave rider is much better and far cheaper. $49 buck right now vs $415 for the Waves version.
2) Waves you can only run 1 track at a time as the plugin has to be in view for it to write. So if you have 6 tracks, you have to make 6 passes (in PT as you can only have one plugin window at a time - LAME)
3) Waves writes on a plugin track, so you can't transfer to a session with just the automation.
4) Wave rider parameters are much better and offers much more control
5) Wave Rider writes automation on the volume track.
Vocal Rider, you can use in any daw. PC and OSX
Wave Rider is OSX only and PT only.
Just thought I'd share.

Hopefully they will port Wave rider to Windows and open it up to other DAWs.
I'd bet they'd see a big increase in users if they did.
I just used wave rider on a dialog edit to even out the dialog. It worked great.
Put Wave Rider on all 8 tracks, hit play and walked away.
While they say that if your buffer is at 1024, you do not have to advance the automation by 40ms, I found that it feels more natural (regardless of buffer size) that a 2 frame advance puts it right in the pocket.
Well, until it is for other DAW's, PT users might find this useful. It has a great ducking feature as well.

Cheating, yes. Time saving. BIG TIME!

damn, I could use Wave Rider this week if it were also PC. Something to keep an eye on. Not going to spend a bunch for the Waves one. Their bang for the buck just isn't there for me much anymore.

Write to the developer. If they expanded the plugin to VST, AU as well as PC, they'd clean up.
Problem with the waves is that it is plugin automation, not volume automation so tweaking it is a pain and if you send the session to someone without VR, then all the moves are gone.
You can't copy and paste the automation either as the center values are different from the volume 0.

yea, that is what I liked the sound of. Automating our usual automation rather than some propriety hidden stuff. I'll try contacting them with the pc request.

fyi:
shift-clicking to open will open the plug-in. When you click the next to open the first won't close. You can do that to several plugs and they'll remain open until you close them by clicking on the window itself, or shift-clicking again on the insert.....

In the voice of Johnny Carson, "I did not know that".
Thanks
Will give it a try.

And this, I think, should be built in to nuendo channel strips!
I mean really - for post - HOW GOOD would it be.
It would even find incredible uses in music (if not a little experimental...)
I'd love this functionality in nuendo. In PT, wave rider rocks. The waves implementaion of this idea is flawed, and although I've only ever used it for an hour or two, is not worth the cash imho.
Cheers, B.

Wave rider is definitely better than Vocal Rider. As I said, with Vocal Rider you need to have all the plug ins open to work, it only writes to the plugin automation where WR writes automation to the volume automation.
