Hey everybody
I can get my hands on an affordable apogee minidac. Will this be a worthwhile investment coming from a Tascam FW1804 for composing and doing my own mastering. I have no option to listen to it beforehand.
I have a HDSP9652 and Blue sky system one for monitoring. A quick reply would be highly appreciated :eusa_angel:
thanks

You could pick it up, try and compare and sell it if you don't like it. That is what's nice about buying used.

One thing though.... "Mastering"...
I have always found apogee dacs to have some color.

Thanks, well it's mastering for myself most of the time and at this point semi pro for others at best. I did read some reviews/ comparisons and a somewhat thicker low midrange is what some said, is that the color you meant? There was no consensus if this was a pre or con. Apogee chimed in and said that their mid was more realistic:eusa_think:.
And reselling if I don't like it is a great idea!

the only ones I have experience is the da+ad 16s. I compared them to Lynx Auroras, onboard Tascam in a DM24 and motu 2408 when I was replacing convertors. I don't think I have ever read Apogee convertors were transparent. That is what I mean about color. When I moved to lynx, I wanted a transparent sound since I use a lot of gear with character and didn't want it from a convertor since I pipe in and out a number of times when mixing. It all gets additive and cloudy.
Screw it. Just buy them, keep them if you like them and if everything translates well to other systems. I would value your own opinion over others. Even though user reports can be useful, as far as I go, as long as people say something isn't junk and breaking all the time, I'd try it and see it I liked it and keep it if I did. Make sure everything is compatible before hand though with your system integration scheme.
