Nice one Brendan, sort of like Massive Attack meets Hifi Mike. Hope you can find more of those free hours!

I like this. But did you mean to have those little crackles in it? Sounds like the purposefully placed lo fi sounds mixed in, which this doesn't seem to really need.

Nice job.

Yeah - there's loads of broken, messed up sounds in there - a lot from broken equipment even.
Getting rid of it can sometimes be hard. often its easier to embrace it.
but i agree, it does take away from bits of the piece.
I'll be revisiting it sometime for sure. There's stuff worth exploring.

Nice work Brendan. What did you use for the pads and the rhythmic material?

Good question. Lemme look.
Higher pads were combination of real piano processed within an inch of their life...along with another piano based pad by the awesome folk @ tonehammer in the ambius 1 package. The processed "real" piano from my studio ended up extremely similar to the sample instrument in the ambius collection.
The lower pads came from all sorts. A tiny bit of omnisphere, and some verbed / reversed out bits from microhammer iron throne.
Rhythmic stuff... kicks are all from various places (I just look up "kick" or "kik" from my library in media bay and keep auditioning until I find something that I'm after. I have that many sample collections that I'd have no clue where the original sounds came from.
But the 3 I chose I ended up pitching down a LONG way - but not before sticking thru filters in my (real) ms20.
The hats are from a sample collection using (again) an MS-20 to create / alter other real sounds. This one is from cinematique instruments, who make all kinds of fun noise into sample based instruments. Nice not so well known company!

I'm liking this track enough to almost have another session on it, and then maybe chuck it onto 2" and have a go mixing it....

Cheers, b

Cello = LASS

Damn, I thought it sounded good! I'm even more tempted to get my hands on LASS now. Just don't tell my wife as her cello actually lives in the same room as my DAW :)

ah, yes. LASS kicks ass! To take full advantage, it does take some extra programming to mix in all the divisi to equal the full sections. That renders the most realistic and richest result. But when it shines, it shines like no other. There is a certain dynamic richness and character that I don't here approached in the new EW Hollywood strings, either..... at least not any demos yet that I've heard.

Aah, I like the inventiveness...the sound design. I wish had more time for this but for me it's mostly just brief tweaking of stock presets - always deadlines....
Good to hear about some other companies too. I'm not particularly familiar with the Tonehammer and Cinnematique stuff. And yes the LASS stuff is very solid. The solo instruments are arguably worth the asking price alone.

LASS is great - and can be much better for solo instruments than what is in this tune.
The cello was played in realtime with just keyboard and mod wheel. It can help a tonne to go in and edit note velocities and mod wheel values with a decent attention to detail. That, and using more than one patch. :) But this tune was done fast, so it prob didn't get the attention it deserved.

Cheers. Brendan.
