View Full Version : When "open" is an option, provide a "close" as well

Geez... once in awhile I try something new in this program and can't find my way out.
For example, two days ago I right clicked on a midi track, scrolled down to MIDI, clicked "Open In-Place Editor" and messed around with it for a few minutes.
Then, I wanted it to go away... I looked everywhere, I clicked everything I thought might show a "close" option. I read the manual, which says how to open it and use it... nothing about turning it off or going back to the regular track view. I had to close the project the way it was an hour later...
Finally, through trial and error last night, I discovered that clicking the LOCK button closed the editor and reset the normal view.
Does it make sense? No.
Any option list window providing an "OPEN..." should toggle a "CLOSE..." when activated in the same option list window. End of suggestion.

Agree completely
But there is a button fo the In-Place Editor at the track kontrols in the project window. You can also assign a Key Command if you find you use it a lot. It's a cool feature actually.
OTOH your general point here is much more important. The Beat Calculator, the Project browser ... you can make a long list with just an opening Key Command that CAN'T close the tool in question, and a list that is just as long with very similar function that you CAN close with the same command.
Crappy programming ... that in the end just wears your brain down

hey Terry,
There is a toggle button for Edit In Place right on the track. It's an icon right next to the E button and before the Bypass Inserts icon.

Ahh... I was using the MIX and EDIT views... it's not there.
That toggle button you and HowlingUlf mentioned only shows up in the DEFAULT view.
Is it just me, or is this just another part of the standard nonsense that we should be accustomed to that the Edit-In-Place toggle isn't included in the standard EDIT view?
...time to "customize" a preset for what should have been common sense in the design.
These customizations for what should be routine items are the types of PITA things that are overlooked or at least tedious whenever you reinstall.
Still, when you can OPEN Edit-In-Place from a midi track right click window popup, it should create a CLOSE text option in that same window, if not insert the toggle button used in the DEFAULT view for closing the option when you're using any other view (EDIT, RECORDING, MIXING) where it's not already included.
If nothing else, we now know that hitting LOCK is a workaround for closing the Edit-In-Place window whenever you're not in the DEFAULT view... ;)
And, thanks HowlingUlf for opening the bigger picture in one glance.
