View Full Version : Midi timing - reasons for issues?

I'll fill in the background later, but I had to rebuild my system drive, reload everything (had Acronis, but long story....).

Everything was fine. Great performance. Just loading the necessary apps, which of course insist on MS .NET, MS C++ Redist/2005, 2008, whatever.

All was fine, but yesterday I go to record a cue and midi is recording 5-6 seconds late. Yep 5-6 SECONDS.

On this system (same apps, same hardware, etc), never needed to check "Use System Timestamp", or at leas the difference was minimal. Checked it back on and all is fine.

So my question is what can cause midi to be so far out in Nuendo? I haven't had time to test it in Reaper, Sonar to see if there is a difference, or this is a Nuendo oddity.

Any ideas what can cause such a large change in midi timing?

Check your audio driver.

Check your audio driver.

Motu asio - fine with system timestamp on, so it seems something else is delaying non-timestamped midi. Not a problem with it on but bugs me that wasn't an issue before the reinstall or even right after. Maybe I can blame it on PACE. Lol

Hey Derdic,

Thats usually more to do with the actual MIDI interface/driver I have found in the past, have you used a different version of the Midi driver ?

System Time Stamp on was always the solution to fix the issues, but I had never experienced 5-6 seconds, thats one for the books.. LOL

Hey Vin - don't think it's a different driver, but I am going to check and reload tomorrow to be sure - seems the most likely culprit - perhaps something else hosed it recently. It is MOTU after all - the wind might have knocked it over.

Weird thing is it was fine last week (post reinstall), so some audio app or plugin seems to have inserted itself where it doesn't belong. Really irritating as the only non-audio app I've reloaded so far is Nero 8, just for DVD data backups (and MS Office, but Nero came loaded on the system, and Office has never been an issue).

Obviously I did something different with this reinstall, or with some app loaded over the past couple of days. Pretty frustrating experience with this system actually, but that's another story.

Yeah, 5-6 seconds is very weird - more than a little unsettling to see the midi clip expanding, but no notes, then stop playing and watch notes appear a few seconds later. Would have actually been laughable it was so unexpected, if I wasn't in the middle of a project. I've never had midi timing problems on any of my systems. Really weird.

Well chalk this one up to ghosts in the machine (for now at least). Shutdown the system over the weekend, rebooted this morning and checked midi timing with and without system timestamp - no delays. Both showed the same dead-on timing. Not sure what happened - may never know unfortunately - at least I hope it doesn't reappear.
