View Full Version : Custom Control Window

There are keycommands that speed up workflow, and then there are those things that either can't be assigned, or are used seldom enough not to warrant a keycommand, but often enough to have quicker access than is currently available. The logical linking of keycommands to the commands they control run out pretty rapidly anyway.
So I offer to you all...... The Custom Control Window. A keycommand/icon opens it, and you can put any functions from the whole of Cubendo in it.
For me, some things from Preferences like the monitoring/audition modes, select events under cursor toggle and locators follows range could be put in it. One button export preferences could be put in it, events to part, buttons for favourite macros etc etc.
The window could be as big or as small and as flexible as you want - always on top or just a keycommand/mouse click away.
Tailored, most used/often needed functions in one window.
What d'ya think?
:)
I'm not sure I'm understanding.
Do you mean something like X-keys? But virtual?
If so, I think that would be a good idea. Although I think I'd prefer something I could use like a keyboard. I guess you could pop the Custom Control Window on another monitor, and have it touch screen, but then I may as well get something like X-keys.

Well the problem with Xkeys is that it doesn't extend your pool of keys. You can only use existing key commands to program macros. If the key command is not in Nuendo you won't be able to do it via Xkeys. It would be awesome if Windows would treat the Xkeys as additional keys to the QWERTY keyboard and I even suggested to Xkeys development team and never got a reply back. Must be some limitation to Windows.

I suppose you could look at it like a virtual extended macro/keycommand triggering thing, but with extended functionality such as one button export preferences and such.
I must admit that I have the keyboard to the left and mouse to the right so I am not one of the "keyboard-nazis" who wants to control everything with keycommands. I acknowledge the fact that I use both keyboard, controller and mouse and would like a window for all the other commands I use that I don't control with the keyboard or controller and that are a few clicks and a scroll away with the mouse.

True, but at least you can assign complex key commands that aren't exactly finger-friendly. That's what I did for commands I put in x-keys - multiple and spread keys commands - leaving the simpler key combinations for the qwerty.
Still, having them as additional keys would be preferable.

That's where the Macs are nice quite frankly. The Option key gives you about 450 more Key commands when you consider Option-x, Option-Alt-x, Option-Command-x etc....
It adds up.

I think the Windows key is possibly the most worthless thing ever created in the history of the world. Anyone know a way it can be turned into a modify key?

Only for very few things in the OS. I don't know of any way to make it more functional in programs like Cubendo.

Hm. Just thinking out loud, but does the windows version of quickeys allow you to use the start key?
Actually, I'd have to say that running quickeys behind nuendo has been the single biggest workflow improvement I've ever had...and thats included installing 4 different real control surfaces at different times (I'm a little obsessed by workflow!)
I've yet to find something I can't do (that I've wanted to) with quickeys, even if there isn't a key command for it (there's all sorts of "search for this window on the screen, and look for this button, and press it kind of commands)
And if you have xkeys, it gets even better.
Some of the things I've done that I couldn't do with a macros:
Denoising with isotope rx : select an area of the audio segment I want to denoise that looks like it will be good for noise profiling, then hit the key command. It trains the denoiser, selects the saved denoising settings I like, selects the whole segment, and denoises.
Creating markers from an edl with one keypress (yes, it CAN be done! That one took a huge amount of time, and includes a few "automator" functions) but last time I tested it, was working fine. Actually, if I ever get it to work ONLY inside quickeys (where it will be useful for mac and pc people) I'll wack the routine up here. Its SO SO useful its not funny. Think the quickest atmosphere editing you've ever done (again, using nuendo macros). Basically, AFTER the reel, I put in extra markers containing atmospheres (across multiple tracks...winds, room tones, insects etc etc), pre-balance them. Do this for each of the different environments needed for the reel. Then, I created macros using nuendo macros + quickeys to edit in automatically (with pre-defined in and out fades) the different environments. I just tab thru the markers, and have a little hand written list beside me describing the different amibiences I created. Then I select my macro, type a number associated with the created ambience, and it edits it in. I've yet to do it on a whole drama series, but even on longform of 45+mins in length, its a big time saver.
Another one...I scrub thru vo's VERY quickly, and hilight the area of the breath. Hit the key for "debreath" and it deletes the selected area, and ads a 1 frame long fade in/fade out either side, goes back one second, and starts the playback (to double check the edit). Means a 30 second read can be debreathed in less than a minute.
Yes, I *can* probably do that with macros in nuendo, but using quickeys, it detects weather I'm in nuendo or protools, and allows the same key to trigger respective macros in either program.
Hm.
But *ANYTHING* inside nuendo that increases the functions inside the current implentation of key commands and macros, and makes them easier to use, would be AWESOME. I quite like the idea, and can see it working for me really well.
Cheers, - and sorry for the long winded post. Brendan.
