View Full Version : AC3 enconding experts
I've run across a problem.
In Compressor 3.03, the AC3 encoding is built in.
I've set the encoder to -31 dialog norm, and compression to off.
Now, there is the little "Enable LFE effects" button, I was told to leave off.
Why, because I was told it "created" an LFE channel with content from the L/R. Dolby doesn't know the different software out there and how they work, so this was their assumption.
Of course, with it off, my DVD had NO LFE channel. But I worry now that turning it on means it is artifically created.
Thoughts?

Okay, I figure it out.
Since I was cutting in FCP a reel and syncing 5.1, I use the common LCRLSRSLFE format.
But FCP uses LR CLFE LSRS and I had the mono outputs set for the wrong channels, so the LFE was dropped.
Think I am in line now.
Time for a new test.

LEXIt has been ages since I dealth with DD, but if I remember correctly, it just tells whether an LFE channel is encoded or not. If you don't want the target systems to depend on having an LFE channel/subwoofer, make sure you mix low end in the main channels. Bass management of most systems with a sub will put low end in the sub anyway. It all depends on the target medium and its audience.

The "Enable LFE effects" button certainly does not "create" material. It merely selects whether or not to encode it. With it off, you get 5.0 - if you have an LFE channel on your mix, it is dropped and ignored.
If you encode a 5.0 mix with "Enable LFE effects" on, you waste bits encoding silence an a superfluous .1 channel.

Thanks. I had figured it out. With the info box, turning it off, shows 5 channels, and on shows 6.
The tutorial was wrong.
