View Full Version : automation data must be part of a part!

:) Hello everybody of this new forum!

I will use this new forum for the most important feature that is still missing in cubase and nuendo IMO ;) !

And here I'll start:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The feature request here is just: automation data should be placed inside
events resp. parts and thus become one object: audio, midi + automation =
one object which can be copied as "shared object".

This is equivalent to "horizontal folders" (the logic audio solution since
version 1.0) or "dynamic events" (the cubase vst 5 solution with handles
on audio events inside the part).

This is not a marginal feature - it's a very big point since it enables
intuitiv composing and a faster changing of a song structure. And it
prevents you from confusion in the arrange window.

--------------------------------------------------------------
What is the idea behind this suggestion?
--------------------------------------------------------------

The idea is that a sequence should not be a "linear tape
machine like tool" - but instead: It should help us to
compose and arrange songs in an intelligent and intuitive way.

This means that we need a kind of modularity or object-orientation.

We need parts, that can be "shared copied" - and of course, these
parts must also contain the automation data. The feature "automation
tied to parts", which has been realized with cubase sx 2.0, is not
enough! Because if I "shared" copy these parts and change the
automation curves, I have to "copy and paste" these automation curves
for every single shared part. This is tedious and superflous! :(

So - please Steinberg - we need "automation is a part of a part".

--------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sure you are aware of the preference "Automation Follows Part". Although not exactly what you describe, it's close... no?

Cheers,

Hi Thonex,

no its not enough, its only a timid step into the direction. I may quote myself here:

Because if I "shared copy" these parts and change the automation curves, I have to "copy and paste" these automation curves for every single shared part. This is tedious and superflous!

Just think of shared copies (in logic "aliases") which are repeated many times. These copies may be backing vocals for the chorus, backing rhythm guitars, synthie-hooks - which have a nice automation of cutoff-frequency, reverb-send or just eq-curves.

What if you have to change one of these automation curves? :(

Ahh... ok ... I see.

Not that this is a solution, but isn't there a preference like "Assign Midi Controller to Automation"... or vice versa? I think I saw something like that... maybe that could help?

Hi Thonex,

no such a preference does not exist.

First, there is something similar, which is "group". You can group events, but it is not a solution since have still have to copy and paste, because shared curves are not updated in these groups. Seldom anybody uses grouping because there's no proper grafic representation.

Secondly, you can add controller data inside of midi parts. This works very good.

Still - even with cubase 4.5 or nuendo 4.5: If you have parts consisting of audio clips and corresponding automation data - these both, the audio and the automation, they do NOT act as ONE object. The result is an infinite copy+paste action ...  :( ... so ....

Your signature is kind of big enroe. :) [Edit: maybe it's just displaying that way for me.]
