This part of the forum is getting rather moldy, so here is a work in progress:

Can't Hold Back© Bill Anderson/ Marc Altman/Joe Golden

I played the keyboards, the bass guitar and the crunchy guitar on the left side. I programmed the drums, based upon one of the co-writer's original parts. Oh, I also did the vocals.

Vinny Zummo plays the funky guitars on the right side and the lead solo. Vinny was my first guitar teacher, and he went on to become a session player and the guitarist with Joe Jackson for a number of years.

Thanks for sharing D, that's a pretty tight piece of work! You've got a hell of a voice there, but if I were to be really picky the mix doesn't seem to do it full justice. The growl breaks through from time to time, but the lead vocal generally sounds a bit woolly (though I'm not in my usual listening environment at the moment).

What signal chain did you use for tracking, and what processing did you use in the mix?

I really don't like when people use nebulous terms like "wooly".

The growl "breaks through" because it's the result of technique, not processing. If I were to growl through the whole part, it would lose it's punctuation.

Anyway, the signal chain for the vocal was Nady RSM-2 modified into UA Solo/610 into Apogee Mini-Me into FW-1884 S/PDIF. I probably did this part before the RSM-2 mods, so if there is some muddiness or smearing on the vocal, that would most likely be the source. The mic sounds much different after the mods. However, it's a good part, so I won't be retracking it.

Processing...hmm...what processing? :rotfl:

I'd have to get back to you on that.

I'd say the vocals are mammoth when they aren't wooly.

OK, I'll try and remember that :eusa_eh:

That was kind of my point. To me, it sounds as though your singing is stellar, but partially obscured by the recording/mixing.

What about the room too?

I'd love to have an opportunity to record & mix a voice like yours. In fact, I'd love to have a snippet of your lead vocal to put through one of plugins I'm building :D

PS - I hope you don't take any of this as a downer, you're light years ahead of me!

I'll keep that in mind for the final mixing session. Part of my problem is mix density. Everything is so lush, it's very difficult making room for everything. I usually arrange for a 5 piece band, and I switch off between guitar and keys.

The room is nothing to speak of...a spare bedroom, untreated.

A downer? No way! I'm pretty cocksure about what I do...probably almost to the point of obnoxiously confident. Can't you see my dick swinging in the breeze...lol?

BTW, no Autotune...in fact, the only processing on the lead vocal is a bit of Altiverb. Same for the backing vocals. :eusa_whistle:

You'd have to sign an NDA for the vocal.

Rhythm guitar has too much gain/ sizzle.

Not too sure about the drum sounds, either.

Cool solos, tasty. :icon_cool:
