View Full Version : Hide Unused Tracks -- not a new idea...

Since there is a think tank here.....
(for the full story... got HERE (http://forum.nuendo.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=15602))
Imagine having a 400+ track template where you are writing a cue that only has 1 flute, 1 piano and 1 cello. You hit Hide Unused Tracks... and then all that would be left showing on the project window are those 3 tracks.... no more scrolling through pages of template to find you tracks.
Or... for you post guys... Imagine mixing a 157 track movie and you are working on a 30 second scene. Put your LR locators to that scene and choose Hide Unused Tracks between LR Locators... Boom... all of a sudden only the tracks that you are working on in that scene are ... well.. seen!!
Sonar has had this type of feature for ages.... now Logic has it.... I remember lobbying very heavily for this feature ages ago... I thought (for some reason) that it was going to be in this release... but it isn't.
What's so frustrating is... it almost would be possible with the new Project Logical Editor.... but there is no Hide Track command. Otherwise I would be able to create a logical preset/macro that would do it. So close yet so far away.
Anyway... this really would vastly improve Nuendo's work flow... especially on larger projects.
Cheers,
T

Having this within the Project Logical Editor would be perfect imho.

And the PLE is the obvious place to take of it.
That device should be the answer to so many 'what ifs'.

Hey T,

I was wondering how long it would take you to bring it up here.. , good thing is we can get the Cubase users across the feature request as well this time.. :-)

heh... yeah.. it took me a week :)
over 31,000 views at N.com... even if 500 of those views are me (prolly not even that many)... that's over 30,000 views.... don't really know what they are waiting for. LOL

Very good ... or elementary, when you think about it.

There *was* an old thread with some macros that were supposed to get this done either from the project window or from the Mixer. The odd thing is that it doesn't always work...
Performing the same moves manually that are listed in the macros - works EVERY TIME.

Check out the video that's referenced in the thread above. Seems to work there - just not for me. Maybe because I'm opening and close the Mixer view in Nuendo at the beginning and end of my macro... but it's frustrating to be this close and yet so far...

Thanks, but don't confuse the mixer window with the project window.
This was discussed before on the Nuendo forum but this is for the mixer section.. NOT the project window.
For those of us that have untold amounts of midi channels as a template, this "mixer only" solution would be rather useless.

+1 here.
Slightly Off Topic
I also would like to see different "views" that are easily managed, with these views also extending to the mixer if desired, with ease. These views would only have the relevant tracks and channels you desire to see at any given time.
The views should be able to be made to be project time-line sensitive so they can reconfigure what you see as the project is playing, and maybe be able to toggle easily to a master view as desired. The views shouldn't be exclusive either. You should be able to have "overlapping" views displayed as needed (different windows).
This way, only a relevant set of tracks and needful configuration would be immediately visible at any given time if one so chooses.
I don't have big projects, but I could still use this from time to time.

Unfortunately, C5 doesn't have Hide Unused Tracks.
Since I was Steinberg's neighbor for the entire NAMM... and in the spirit of good fun... and since we let them build their wall... and in hoping that they'll listen, here is my new "Hide Unused Tracks" link :-)

+1.
I especially like the hide between locaters could be handy. I also like the idea of combining it with the PLE and having it hide VSTi's or folder tracks. Sort of like it does in the mixer.

P.S. Nice pic.

Oh for goodness sake. Do you really think T is appreciating you taking emphasis away from a very valid point with smilies??

How can you say it's a valid point? Why would anyone need so many tracks? Surely a couple is enough? :icon_rolleyes:

I made a click with a midi track once....if only I could have hidden it I may have been happier....but yeah seriously - if had created that track and NOT used it, I would like the option to hide it....but then again what if I don't create it in the first place...
Why not try just not creating the trax T? That oughtta do it maaaaaaate!!!

The hide track feature sounds good, but it really isn't that hard to just drag a track up to the top of the tracks list. I do mostly orchestra composing and run about 225 tracks in my templates. I normally keep all the tracks showing.
But for a very small projects like horn/string arrangements for pop/rock, etc....I'll record on the track/sound I want, and when I need them handy and next to each other, I just quickly drag them up to the top, in the same relative order I have the orchestra set. Takes a second or two each time I drag one up to the top.
If I want it even cleaner, all my tracks are in folders associated by orchestral sections and I just close them.

My template is over 400 midi tracks... and so are a lot of other orchestral composers I know. My tracks are already in folders... WW, Brass, Strings, Perc, Synth etc...... anyway... when doing a score and working on a piano, flute , cello cue (for example)... it would be nice to hide all other unused tracks in between the locators (one of the feature requests).
Cheers,
T

Ahh, I'm envisioning it better now. Thanks.
+1 here for the feature, too. That is great.
