View Full Version : Moving fader maintenance
I've got to disassemble my Tascam FW-1884 to replace a defective op-amp, and I've decided to upgrade all of the op-amps in the process. I've decided to go with the TI OPA2134 op-amp, since the Burr-Brown units are commanding a huge premium on the NOS market. These should still be miles better than the crappy NJM4580s that are there now.
Since I have to do some major dis-assembly to get to them, I might as well service the moving faders, since they've been getting rather creaky as of late.
Has anyone here actually done any moving fader maintenance?
I'm thinking of ordering the Caig Labs fader lube and fader grease to do the work.

I had a FW-1082 that had "chattering" faders and, after much research, I bought Caig Labs fader lube and it fixed the problem instantly. I can definately reccomend it.

That's very good to know. Thanks!
My Caig FaderLube came today.
I put a few drops into each fader channel. I did not disassemble anything. The faders are now working almost as new. My FW-1884 gets daily use, and I've had it for about six years.
I am very pleased and highly recommend this product, even for standard non-motorized faders. I could definitely feel the difference afterward.
I've also got all my parts for the opamp replacement job I have to do (chs 1&2 are bleeding into each other). After much research, I chose the Burr-Brown OPA2134 opamp, since it seems to get great reviews across the board. I also needed to get four DIP to SIL adapter cards, which I purchased at Brown Dog ( http://cimarrontechnology.com/so8dip8tosiladapterpn060301.aspx ), as I figured I might as well replace all four opamps while I have everything in pieces.
BTW, Burr-Brown was bought out by Texas Instruments a number of years back, but they are still packaging the OPA2134s as Burr-Brown units (I got mine at Mouser - www.mouser.com - I think we can presume they are still being manufactured at the original fabrication facility ). I soldered the sockets to the adapters a little while ago and they are ready to install.
I'll try and take some pictures, but my main lens got a fubared firmware update the other night and I have to send it to Olympus to clear it.
