Just in case anyone is interested, MIR has been released. I don't have a computer that can run it, so I have no opinion as yet.

Thanks for posting; was going to bring this up.

I am curious to know what you guys think. I am NOT AT ALL impressed with the demos. I'll basically c&p from vi.net...responding to:

"I'm not convinced with how it sounds, though. Anyone else having an impression, there's a lot of phase cancellation on the demos? Or maybe it's not this, but something different I cannot properly describe?"

I said:

"I listened to the demos, and I definitley hear what you hear. It's not real phase cancellation, but it almost sounds like there is some of that going on. It's like some of the instruments (specifically the cymbal crescendos on the right in "W.Why" and the tympanis in "Zar") aren't sitting in the right place; I think what MIR is attempting to do here is add depth (one thing that is definitely lacking in mock-ups), but I thnk what they suceeded in doing is screwing up the imaging. Of course, it's hard to tell that for sure without hearing the dry version, but that is what it sounds like."

To me, these demos do not sound good - at least as far as space and depth are concerned. And people at vi say, "the sound is nothing short of miraculous" and, "I'm impressed by the depth it creates." and, "Whoa... There's definitely some depth there I wasn't expecting." And I am left saying, are these people serious? Or is the psyhological factor kicking in..."well, if it's by VSl, it must sound good - so it does!"??? :eusa_whistle:

I posted on VI, but I agree - neither the stereo or 5.1 sound right.

perhaps they will do 1.5 million versions of MIR, and then the customer can choose their favorite.

I currently have no opinion. I don't think any of the demos are particularly good, and I'll be sticking with my current setup for the moment. Having said that, there is nothing to compare it with, as you can't do the same with other libraries as you can with VSL.
