View Full Version : Two platter hard drives for samples.....alright now?

For years I've stuck with single platter drives for streaming high voice count sampled instruments for composing. But lately, with so many GIANT libraries coming out, to keep up, I'm getting to the point that I think I'll need larger than 320GB hard drives...........

Any solid experience out there with say 500-750GB hard drives for sample streaming? Any percieved problems with samples for an instrument spanning across platters?

Thanks,
-Paul

I must be missing your logic.

No, I have no problems with my 500 & 640 GB drives for streaming or otherwise.

I have been using bigger drives with samples for years with no problems.

Thanks for the input, I feel better now planning for larger drives.

The logic I and others have had over the years, though I won't bet the bank it is 100% valid, is that there could be 'hicups' in the seek/streaming process when it occurs that an instrument's samples may be across multiple platters in a hard drive.

I don't find that to be a relevant problem. It doesn't happen.

The 1TB samsung preform stellar here. And I think files are not spread around platters, but more like striped raid. But I'm not sure about that.

Well, I think the 500 and 640's are single platter.

In a heads up match, the single will probably perform better than the double, but you have to take into account the buffers.

16 vs 32.

personally, I stick with single platter for my slave systems. I don't need more than 500 gigs anyway.

I had thought the 320GB was the largest for single platter..... maybe is was in the past.

I hadn't planned on larger than 640GB anyway, so this is all pretty good news. When you have soundware companies like EW coming out with 250GB libraries..... even when you have slaves, you can need to start thinking bigger with the hard drives. Nice the prices are so low.

Vin said a while ago that the 500 and 640's were now single platter.
