View Full Version : Google OS
Yep, just as I predicted 2 years ago - Google announces Chrome OS (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html).
I have to say, if it is as fast and efficient as their Chrome browser, MS and Apple are in trouble, eventually, if Chrome takes off in the desktop market and not just netbooks.

So if I understand this correctly, Chrome OS will really only let you do anything that can be done in a browser.
I know that OutSim had an experimental version of SynthMaker that would run in Firefox, and there's some cool Flash based audio apps out there - but I don't see DAW developers getting overly excited about this.
Still, it's interesting stuff...

Hey Dedric,
It will be interesting to see what eventuates, but after my recent experience with Linux - Ubuntu Studio, where all was well and good until something went a bit screwy. For me it was simply trying to install Open Office, and what followed was me going to Hell in hand basket navigating command line bullshite to try and sort it when the installation failed and then trying to remove it for a second go, I won't be going to any alternate O.S again in a great hurry.
I would hate to be a nube running into the shite I did , you would run screaming back to Windows/OSX in a heartbeat, actually I did as well... LOL
Without having read more than that article, it does sound like a souped up browser, but the reference to desktops has me wondering if they are keeping their options open to develop it into a fullblown OS.
Given Google's business model though, I doubt it will ever provide for true standalone offline operation, and I wouldn't be surprised to see MS and Apple eventually start limiting offline capabilities as well.
No doubt there is no attraction for an OS like Chrome in our market at this point.
Hey Vin,
Yeah, I left the command line world years ago with Dos and Unix. Never looked back. That's why I've never bothered with Linux - fine for programmers wanting to tinker, but not my idea of a fun anymore.
It seems to me Chrome would be, or should be marketed as a quick, simple, light OS that users don't have to think about (e.g. what OSX was *supposed* to be, lol).
How does Cubendo run on it? 64bit?

Runs great. No plugin compatibility problems and video support is without peer.
The only downside is google-analytics reports and owns every track you record, mixer and plugin setting, and copies every mix you create to Google's databank for future rights-free worldwide access.

Knowing how Google collects personal information I would stay well away from it. It will be a massive statistical tool that happens to be an OS as well.

Yep, I agree. I stay as far away from any such thing, as I can. That goes for things like Twitter, MySpace, etc. too. I'm surprised that so many people don't seem to care about that.
And I guess most people know that Facebook is run by a data-mining research company setup by (or at least often contracted by) the CIA.
